Infrastructure Network Engineer

Our client Scottish Power are currently recruiting for a Infrastructure Network Engineer to join their team based in Glasgow. on a contract basis initially. Ideally for this role they are looking for someone with experience in Technical Architecture experience of a number of clients similar in size to ScottishPower. Experienced in the design and operation of system architecture. Academic qualification of degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant network technology discipline

For more information on this role see below: (insert job spec below): The re-organisation of SPEN Real Time Systems (RTS) and Telecommunication responsibilities within Smart Grid Operation ( SGO) has produced several changes, one of which is the establishment of an Infrastructure Team. This team will be responsible for the design and support of the operational data network and firewall management within SGO.

The Network Engineer provides leadership on the planning and programme management of Infrastructure changes to the data network estate, while acting as a programme co-ordinator on behalf of internal customers.

This role is focused on the application of technology-specific and project/change delivery expertise to ensure the successful design, deployment, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of network assets in line with Group standards and policies.

The fundamental objective of this role is the establishment and delivery of plans that will lead to the acceptance, implementation, maintenance (according to the agreed refresh policies) and decommissioning of specific hardware or software assets in support of the broader SGO architectural vision.

Standards Definition – definition, communication, and education on appropriate technical standards within the technology area.

Design – leading and approving the design of solutions, ensuring compliance with Group standards and direction.

Project Definition – development of business cases that define the costs, benefits, and delivery approach related to data network development or refresh.

Project Delivery – managing the project lifecycle to ensure successful completion, with effective stakeholder communication throughout.

Supplier Engagement – developing and maintaining relationships with suppliers and
supervising the delivery of services from them to ensure on-time, on-budget performance.

Technical Support – providing technical expertise to assist with the resolution of escalated
operational problems and restoration of service.

Recommend annual work program and budgetary requirements to line Manager

Technical input to architectural planning – utilising relevant expertise to ensure that
architectural plans and budgets reflect the activities and investment required to move from the
current state to the desired state

Investigate failures and defects affecting EnergyNetworks Infrastructure network equipment and
recommend appropriate remedial actions and/or changes as required.

Perform all duties in support of SP EnergyNetworks Operational Excellence goals & other
business drivers

Produce, develop and maintain Infrastructure policy and process documentation reflecting best
practise and operational experience.

Evaluate and recommend new server solutions and technologies.

Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environmental
matters.

An ambassador for SGO Infrastructure team.

Provide support and direction to Senior Network Engineer

Self-driven, accountable and responsible for all SGO network related engagements.

Responsible for the development and ongoing support of network architecture solutions which align with SGO requirements, policy and process.

Responsible for the SGO network architecture maintenance and technical governance roles.

Perform Technical Infrastructure Design & Development support for key platforms as part of platform upgrade and refresh activities.

Preparation of technical infrastructure standards including build and configuration standards for a range of SGO network platforms

Architectural planning and technology obsolescence management.

Operational support with incident analysis and resolution options as circumstances dictate.

Delivery of technology development initiatives ranging from £0.5 to £4m plus

Supervise the work of people employed through 3rd party organisations or on a contract basis.

Provide a significant contribution to the design of network, cyber solutions and supporting network infrastructure within SGO.

Establish and maintain relationships within the SGO team.

Participate in a network governance capacity to ensure relevant network implementations are compliant against the Group Standards and policies.

Developing and retaining a level of knowledge in the technology area, meaning that the role holder is regarded as an expert and would demonstrate this through the delivery of presentations.

Technical Architecture experience of a number of clients similar in size to ScottishPower

Proven track record of delivery that balances technical and commercial judgement

In-depth technical experience in architecture development or technical support role covering a number of technology areas.

Should possess detailed knowledge of network hardware platforms, firewall technologies and Software Defined Networking

Networking with peers and business IT suppliers will be an essential ingredient to this job to ensure that technology decisions are based on a range of information sources.

Basic knowledge across a broad range of technologies, including voice and data networking, internet technologies.

Able to review and challenge proposals from 3rd parties, utilising a combination of technical competency and effective inter-personal skills.

Ability to organise and plan system architecture activities to support SGO business timescales.

Communicate system architecture requirements to all interested parties (SGO teams and suppliers).

Influencing stakeholders at both business and technical levels.

Achieving effective working relationships with colleagues in Iberdrola.

Working with suppliers to ensure that SGO gets the right level of service from them at the lowest cost for that level of service.

Translating business requirements into , effective system designs that, once delivered, contribute towards a more consolidated and cost-effective SGO systems architecture.

Recognising the possibilities afforded by being part of the Iberdrola Group and capitalising on the resources available to deliver more effectively.

Makes decisions that balance commercial and technical requirements, whilst achieving compliance with SGO standards and policies.

Management of technical, financial and project delivery risks.

Takes a holistic view of requirements across projects to ensure that solutions are standardised and re-used to minimise investment required to meet the requirements.

Role holder will be part of the SPEnergyNetworks SGO Infrastructure Team (and part of the wider Iberdrola team).

Must be a team player with good inter-personal and communicative skills.

Minimum criteria:

Academic qualification of degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant network technology discipline.

Knowledge of EnergyNetworks health & safety requirements and compliance.

A broad understanding of the organisation and operation of the business.

Experienced in the design and operation of system architecture.

Significant IT system architecture experience gained from working in a number of equivalent roles.

Record of academic achievement, including some form of recognised qualification from further education, such as a degree.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Numerate and able to deal with finances for the purposes of managing budgets or contracts with suppliers.

Must be a proven team player to work, promote and consolidate efficient team working relationships.
