Environment Manager

Environment Manager (STN)

4 Month inital contract

Job Purpose

To ensure airport development and operation is conducted in line with Environmental legal requirements, best practice principles and Client corporate policy. The role will support the asset management function to provide expert advice and input into asset development, capital delivery functions and the wider airport operation. The role will act as the custodian of the Environmental Management system and will hold internal departments, 3rd parties and contractors operating at the airport to account for their environmental impact and performance.

This is a group role and will also be responsible for sharing best practice across the group, developing and maintaining group standards and there will be an element of travel between sites as and when required.

Principal Accountabilities
- Co-develop and ownership of Environmental Standards and support their integration into airport and groups LOP’s. The standards should set out how the airports need to comply with all environmental & biodiversity legal compliance, pollution prevention and define the culture across both the airport and Client.
- Provide guidance to the business on forthcoming risks and changes to legislation that may impact on commercial or operational performance. Facilitate 3rd line SME assurance against current legislation
- Be the SME (Subject Matter Expert) for the airport and the Environmental Management System (EMS) and manage the re-accreditation to ISO14001, ensuring that the Environment Management System is updated and identified and that non-conformities are addressed in an appropriate manner. Fully integrate the EMS into the operation (including risks, aspects & impacts, standards)
- Develop and deliver the environmental 2nd line audit and assurance program including managing external assurance audits by Client Group, certification bodies, and other parties as required.
- Lead and grow the relationship with regulators and key stakeholders such as the EA, Water authorities, Natural England, local wildlife trusts, non-profit organisations
- Work in partnership with the biodiversity team to development and implementation of habitat management plans and the promotion of bio-diversity best practice across the airport and group.
- Develop and implement processes at both airport specific and group wide level to ensure key environmental risks are identified, assessed, mitigated and controlled.
- Assist in preparing business cases and work closely with the airport teams to ensure that environmental best practices are included in proposals and developments from the outset.
- Support on environmental engagement with the airport community (both internal and external stakeholders) including designing effective methods for communicating and engaging with stakeholders.
- Support the development of training and awareness of our staff and relevant stakeholders
- Provide oversight of waste management and recycling operations driving compliance, innovation and conduct necessary audits at key touch point of the waste management process.

Decision-Making
- Identify, describe, quantify and mitigate Environmental Aspects, impacts and corporate risks registers to ensure that the business over all environmental risk and impacts are reduced.
- Escalating environmental, water and biodiversity risks, non-compliances or non-conformities to senior leaders in the business to ensure effective environmental management.
- Manage relationships with key regulators, internal and external stakeholders, and interested parties to ensure appropriate levels of communication are maintained.
- Make informed decisions and provide advice on environment related asset development Responsible for developing and implementing Clients approach to encouraging, and enforcing where necessary, improved environmental performance and compliance across on-airport business partners and contractors.
- Manage local budgets to ensure there is no overspend for the FY - Budget responsibility for licensing, audits and consultant support

Knowledge, Experience and Skills
- Environmental Science or related degree 10 years+ multiple Industry experience (including outside of aviation) of managing, interpreting and implementing environmental legislation, including being able to Demonstrate knowledge of environmental legal requirements and pollution prevention
- Full member of IEMA or equivalent
- Structured approach to development and management of mature Environmental Management Systems
- Auditor qualification or equivalent with Lead auditor desirable, with extensive experience in auditing a variety of organisations
- Strong communication and influencing skills, including excellent report writing, presentation and grammar skills essential
- Strong analysis and problem-solving skills
- Experience of working, engaging and delivering to a senior management team
- Experience in managing a team both direct staff and agency / contractors essential
- NEBOSH National General Certificate
