Duration:             12 months

Rate:                    £35 - £45 per hour Umbrella or £25.60 - £32.91 per hour PAYE (inside IR35)

Our client, who specialise in Tactical Unmanned Air Systems, are seeking a Technical Author to join their Engineering team who will be preparing publications and data packages to support various programme requirements. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparing publications and data packages to support current and prospective programmes.
  • Undertaking hands-on facilitation, demonstration and validation using appropriate equipment, tooling and engineering techniques.
  • Collaborating with other teams to resolve technical issues and requirements.

The Technical Author will develop and manage effective relationships across the breadth of the company and its customers and have the confidence to technically lead cross discipline project teams.

Duties and Tasks

  • Compile new and standard technical publications, and amendments using Aerospace recognised techniques including application of appropriate data structures, formatting, style and detail.
  • Identify, define and specify illustration requirements and usage to meet industry standards.
  • Identify and liaise with relevant teams in order to resolve technical issues and requirements.
  • Managing allocated workload within task deadlines, maintain accurate hours of work and generating progress records for Programme Managers and/or Senior Leaders.
  • Research the technical requirements for Publications by reference to: engineering drawings, CAD models, production standards, processes, industry specifications, logistic support analysis records and related component hardware by using appropriate tooling.
  • Undertake hands-on facilitation, demonstration and validation using appropriate equipment, tooling and engineering techniques. Proof-read documents prior to passing data into quality systems.
  • Understand and apply data configuration control and archiving techniques, and data management processes.
  • Understand, apply and maintain Common Source Database and Content Management methodologies related to technical publications production, storage and delivery.

Proven Ability / Key Skills

  • Proficient in a broad range of Aerospace Industry writing specifications, to ensure clear understanding, compliance, and implementation.
  • Familiar with EAGLE Publishing System
  • An understanding of the relevant regulatory standards (such as AECMA S1000D and Def Stan 00-600).
  • Proven ability of desktop publishing software (such as iLog, Framemaker etc.).
  • Knowledge and application of Aerospace/Defence or similar publication standards.
  • Practical proven ability of mechanical engineering and technical authorship.
  • Familiar with IETM development and deployment and understand data management techniques and complementary quality processes.
  • Ability to work within defined compliance and processing structures.
  • Ability to work with new Publishing production tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both verbal and written.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work to high levels of accuracy.
