Purpose of the role:
The Senior Radiation Shielding Consultant will support the Shielding Discipline Lead in providing technical solutions for projects, including:
- Delivering radiation models and calculations for shielding, dose assessment, and neutron activation.
- Assuming shielding technical lead roles within projects.
- Integrating with multi-disciplinary teams to identify and address shielding issues across projects.
- Mentoring and training junior team members.
- Enhancing existing radiation protection procedures.
Key Responsibilities
General Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Deliver radiation models and calculations, including shielding, dose assessment, and neutron activation.
- Author and verify shielding reports and related calculation notes.
- Develop and maintain excellent working relations with customers, colleagues, and other departments.
- Support strategic growth campaigns and bids, including creating marketing content and presentation materials.
- Maintain and promote industry best practices, potentially representing the company at shielding-related conferences.
- Assist leadership in driving cultural development and change. Ensure the application of the highest standards in health, safety, environment, ethics, and behaviours.
Growth Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships.
- Support growth through business development opportunities.
Project Delivery Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Supervise junior technical specialists within the same discipline.
- Manage customer relationships, ensuring effective communication and resolution of technical and delivery issues.
- Manage the delivery of tasks within the agreed Delegation of Authority (DOA) against cost and program expectations.
- Review and approve technical submissions.
- Ensure adequate review, verification, and approval of all deliverables.
- Raise quality plans for single-discipline work packages.
- Provide feedback on lessons learned for future projects.
Bid Support Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Support business-winning processes through tender input and review.
- Participate in Learning from Experience (LFE) reviews to enhance future opportunities.

Ensure correct application of processes and procedures to technical activities.

Experience/Qualifications/Skills
- Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering technical discipline.
- Minimum of five years’ experience within the nuclear industry as a shielding practitioner.
- Excellent working knowledge of radiation transport codes such as Monte Carlo codes (MCBEND, MCNP) and Point kernel codes (RANKERN, Microshield).
- Working knowledge of the SCALE suite of codes (for fuel inventory and activation analysis) is desirable.
- Understanding critical issues is beneficial.
- Willingness to obtain suitable security clearance for MOD-related work.
