Production Engineer

Job Description:

As a crucial element between our client and their suppliers the role is heavily integrated in the Design development process, providing support from a technical perspective ensuring that new or updated designs are fit for Manufacture & Assembly and that jig & fixture requirements are understood and planned for. The position will be based on-site working at our clients Cambridge facility with potential travel supplier sites in and around the UK

*Candidates with prior experience in either industrial welding or structural assembly of particular interest*

The Production Engineer will be continually looking at new or improved materials, processes and work practices that can be embedded into future products to reduce cost and lead-time & improve quality. Candidates will have a background in either structural assembly or industrial welding. There will also be a need to assist in the overall planning process at various stages, with particular emphasis on Prototype build support

Responsibilities will include:

  • Liaising directly on the factory floor with suppliers from day one of design through to completion
  • Assisting with bid activities from a Manufacturing and Assembly perspective
  • Providing support to project development activities including reviews (PDR, CDR, DFMA’s etc) & general queries
  • Reviewing & signing off for drawings and other design data prior to full release, ensuring that the items are fit for Manufacture & Assembly
  • Partnering with the procurement team in defining the initial Make vs Buy decision on all parts and ensuring this follows through into final product release
  • Monitoring the cost of products and working with Project teams to keep costs within budgets (Labour, Material etc)
  • Assisting procurement in the sourcing of suppliers to meet product requirements
  • Identification of Tooling and Jig requirements and instigating the procurement and manufacture of identified requirements
  • Providing on-going support to production with prototypes and first off’s through to introduction into full rate production
  • Assisting the wider planning team where required with creation of Routings, BoM’s & Shop Orders
  • Beginning development of Work Instructions

Please apply if you have most of the following:

  • Prior experience in either industrial welding or structural assembly
  • Any familiarity with the following industries will be extremely beneficial: automotive, defence, military, construction
  • Technical knowledge in structural assembly or industrial welding
  • Good working knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication & assembly techniques
  • Engineering degree or equivalent experience/ qualification
  • MRP/ ERP capability
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Analytical thinking and process driven
  • Ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders
  • Able to respond at pace and look to improve process
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Problem solving skills, identifying errors and providing solutions to resolve
  • CAD experience desirable but not essential
