Research Officer

Role: Research Officer

Role Purpose:
The Research Officer is a key member of Transport for the North’s (TfN) Research and Economics Team, responsible for conducting research and analysis to understand the transport needs of the North of England and to advocate for strategic interventions in the transport network. The role involves collaborating closely with TfN policy and strategy teams as well as transport modelling teams to support evidence-based policy making.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Identify Evidence Gaps and Develop Research Specifications:
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify research needs.
- Develop research specifications and methodologies to address identified gaps.

2. Analyze Qualitative and Quantitative Datasets:
- Utilize qualitative and quantitative data from primary and secondary sources.
- Apply appropriate methodologies to analyze data, including national statistics and outputs from transport models.

3. Conduct Literature Searches and Reviews:
- Manage the Northern Evidence Hub, an online database of transport-related evidence.
- Conduct literature searches and reviews to gather insights on transport interventions and policy themes.

4. Summarize and Communicate Research Outputs:
- Prepare reports, data visualizations, presentations, and dashboards to communicate research findings.
- Tailor communication for diverse audiences, including Local Authorities, the Department for Transport, and the public.

5. Collaborate with Colleagues:
- Work closely with TfN colleagues involved in transport modelling and policy development.
- Ensure alignment and maximize the impact of research on policy and strategy development.

Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., economics, transportation, urban planning).
- Experience in research and analysis, preferably in the transportation sector.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
- Familiarity with statistical software and data visualization tools.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of transport policy and its impact on economic growth, decarbonization, social exclusion, and public health is desirable.
