Role: Responsible Designer Programme Manager - UK New Nuclear Power Station Construction Project

Location: Bristol (BS32 4TR), London or at power station construction site in Suffolk. Office based 3 days/week, with other days worked from home

Salary: Highly competitive + excellent benefits including 10% bonus, £8.4k car allowance, 10% client pension contribution (rising to 15% after 2 years), private healthcare and 28 days holiday (rising to 30 days after 5 years). Our client is looking for a highly-skilled Senior Project Management and Senior Engineering professional to work as Responsible Designer Programme Manager / Engineering Programme Manager supporting the construction of their new UK nuclear power station located in the South-East of England, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious projects.

The Responsible Designer Programme Manager will be responsible for negotiating and overseeing the client’s relations with a company responsible for the production of the construction drawings to be utilised in the construction of the power station. The role will thus ideally be based in the client’s North-West Bristol office close to the M4/M5 junction, though the candidate could choose to be based in the client’s central London office or at the power station construction site in Suffolk should they prefer that. The role will require someone to be in the office 3 days/week, with the other days worked from home, though some flexibility on this might be considered.

This role would ideally suit a Chartered Engineer with a track record of programme management in the delivery of major infrastructure projects, and ideally some nuclear industry experience, as well as an expert understanding of the design process and design office operations, though individuals with other backgrounds in highly-regulated industries will be considered.

The client is happy to consider individuals from outside the UK requiring sponsorship to work in the UK.

Job Purpose

The Responsible Designer Programme Manager reports directly to the project’s Head of Engineering Integration within the Project Delivery Organisation (PDO) and is responsible for ensuring the  capabilities of the entity responsible for producing the construction drawings for the project are effectively and efficiently engaged to provide replication, design and ancillary services across the  organisation. Ultimately the project Programmes are ensuring that the RD deliver to time, cost and quality, however the RD Programme Management Team are crucial in ensuring consistent application of the LOA (Pre Financial Close) and NSA contract (post Financial Close) across the project organisation. The total value of these contracts is of more than £1bn. This will involve acting as SME’s in how the LOA/NSA operates and will also involve ensuring that Lessons Learned are continuously embraced to ensure the contract vehicles remain effective and efficient.

Principal Accountabilities

Short-Term

  • Finalise NSA Contract through involvement in Long Form Contract negotiations
  • Finalise NSA Contract through drawing in project SME’s where appropriate (such as Legal, Commercial, PMO and Engineering Integration)
  • Ensure that NSA Stakeholders are kept appraised of progress
  • Work with the project Programmes to ensure Task Order 2024 is delivered to time, cost and quality
  • Line Management responsibilities for LOA/NSA RD Programme Management team

Longer-Term

  • Ensure NSA management organisation is fully integrated within the project organisation
  • Continuously improve the NSA approach to ensure that delivery remains effective and efficient
  • Ensure that annual Task Orders are developed and approved in accordance with the contract
  • Line Management responsibilities for LOA/NSA RD Programme Management team

Key Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Key skills and experience will include:

  • Track record of programme management in the delivery of major infrastructure projects within a technically complex and dynamic environment whilst ensuring high levels of safety, security and environmental responsibility,
  • Good influencing and persuasion skills with the ability to enthuse and inspire multidisciplinary teams and build successful relationships at all levels.
  • Experience of successfully engaging groups of stakeholders.
  • Excellent presentation, influencing and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, able to develop relationships and maintain effective networks.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Degree and chartered status in an engineering, projects or other related field would be ideal, though individuals with a suitable level of other experiecne will happily be considered
  • Understanding the needs of quality and how quality is assured and controlled.
  • Prior experience working on UK nuclear power station construction projects is beneficial but not essential to being considered
