Safety Case Engineers - UK Nuclear New Build

Role: Safety Case Engineer (various experience levels) - Hinkley Point ‘C’ nuclear power station project

 

Location: Gloucester (close to j11a of the M5)

Salary + Benefits: Highly competitive + benefits including 5% bonus, 10% client pension contribution (15% after 2 years service), 28 days holiday (+ 2 days after 2 years service) and private healthcare

Work Pattern: Full-time role, 2-3 days/week in office (some flexibility could potentially be considered). Part-time might also be considered.

Start: February 2024 onwards

Our client, EDF, is looking for Safety Case Engineers of various levels of seniority (from junior up to Principal level) to join their team in providing support to their major UK nuclear power station construction project(s).

The home office for this role will be in Gloucester, close to j11a of the M5. This is a hybrid role requiring up to 3 days/week in the office, with the remained worked from home. A minimum of 1 day/week will be spent in the Gloucester office, with up to 2 other days/week spent in the Gloucester, Bristol or Bridgwater offices. Some flexibility in these arrangements might be considered for the right candidate.

The safety case engineers should be capable of understanding the power plant and how the safety case fits into / relates to that, as well as appreciating the safety implications, and be able to author reports related to / around that.

The role would ideally suit someone with more ‘generalist’ skills who can look at and understand a wide range of information and then fit this into the safety case.

Though a previous background in the nuclear industry would be ideal, individuals with similar experience obtained in other relevant, safety critical industries (e.g. defence, aerospace) would also happily be considered.

Key Responsibilities

The Design Authority (DA), as part of the licensee organisation, is responsible for developing the nuclear safety case and maintaining its integrity throughout the full lifecycle of the nuclear power plant. 

As an experienced Safety Case Engineer working in the new build Design Authority you will play an important role in the development and maintenance of the safety case. You will provide technical leadership in resolving challenging issues to support the construction, commissioning and the safe operation of the Nuclear Power Plant. You will have opportunities to gain experience and work in a variety of different aspects of the safety case from developing the main Safety Report through to safety justifications to support modifications.

In your role you will be supported by and need to engage with a variety of disciplines within the wider organisation (Nuclear Analysis, Pressurised Water Reactor Technology, Construction, Commissioning and Operations), while also working with OEM designers/suppliers and internal/external regulators. You will provide technical leadership to define and deliver safety case requirements to ensure compliance within a regulated environment. You will have opportunities to develop skills across a wide range of technical and plant engineering disciplines, through completion of planned work and providing support to address emergent challenges.

Key attributes you should be able to demonstrate include:

  • A motivated, self-starting, dynamic individual who is able to work with multiple disciplines and organisational levels to drive the development and maintenance of the safety case
  • Someone who is able to understand the bigger picture, have the ability distil a range of source data and analysis to define, scope and strategically plan the delivery of the safety case
  • The ability to understand a broad range of technical analysis, identify and lead pragmatic solutions as well as challenge current strategies and integrate technical knowledge into clear, concise and coherent information
  • Someone who thrives in working in high profile, dynamic, time critical projects with the ability to identify and focus on resolving key issues and able to hold a technical position in a challenging environment
  • Someone with excellent organisation skills, who can work autonomously and works well in teams.
  • Ability to liaise clearly and confidently with key stakeholders as required

Qualifications, Training and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering business solutions that align with high-level strategies, eliminate duplication and improve the efficiency of business operations. 
  • Demonstrable experience of business analysis and successful business architecture change in a complex and evolving environment. 
  • Demonstrable ability to identify interfaces between organisational departments and functions and integrate/align procedures and systems across functions. 
  • Strong proven strategic investigative and analytical skills using a variety of analysis techniques. 
  • Experience of developing investment cases for large complex business change programmes, including financial modelling and appraisal skills. 
  • In-depth knowledge of business process analysis and design techniques, including the use of modelling and collaborative tools. 
  • Extensive knowledge of standard business analysis methods and techniques, with the ability to select the appropriate approach for a particular assignment. 
  • Excellent communication, presentation and written skills, with relevant experience of influencing the decision making of senior executives, business managers and third parties at a strategic level.
