And right now, we’re looking for an Electrical Design Engineer. Based at our Capenhurst site location you’ll provide Electrical & Instrumentation design function to ensure the delivery of safe, cost-effective projects to maintain and improve the operation of the UCP Tails Management Facility.

Initiate, develop, design, and commission new minor projects relating to plant E&I improvements. Ensure all activities are in compliance with local procedures, safety, quality and environmental standards. Provide accurate and clear communications with UCP Maintenance / Engineering plant facing teams. Work within a multi discipline environment to deliver projects to budget and to schedule.

What will your day look like?

 

  • Comply with all legislative, regulatory and company standards and procedures that are applicable to the role.  Key areas include Nuclear Site Licence (NSL) compliance and implementation of the Major Accident Protection Policy (MAPP).
  • Develop a strong sense of teamwork, to promote excellent safety and delivery performance.  Work collaboratively with operations and maintenance when proposing design solutions and organising construction work.
  • Improve plant performance, reduce operating/maintenance costs.
  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers to ensure the cost-effective provision of services and equipment.
  • Manage and control project delivery in accordance with budgets and customer expectations.
  • Implement projects in accordance with agreed processes and procedures to ensure compliance with the UCP management system and configuration control arrangements.
  • Discipline subject matter expert.
  • Proficient user of change management process and configuration control procedures.
  • Designated as ‘Contract Supervisor’.
  • Design and develop electrical systems, including power distribution, control systems, and instrumentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Conduct engineering analyses, such as load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies, to optimize electrical system performance and reliability.
  • Specify electrical equipment and components based on project requirements, technical specifications, and vendor capabilities.
  • Prepare detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation using CAD software and other engineering tools.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, civil, and process engineers, to integrate electrical systems into overall project designs.
  • Oversee the testing, commissioning, and startup of electrical systems, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Provide technical support for troubleshooting electrical issues, analysing failures, and implementing corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, codes, and standards governing electrical design and construction in the nuclear industry.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost optimization, and innovation in electrical design practices and methodologies.

What do you need to be great at this role?

 

  • Engineering degree (Process Instrument/Electrical)
  • Recognised safety management qualification.
  • Hands on Technical experience as a commissioning or CE&I Maintenance technician prior to achievement of Engineering degree.
  • Delivery of design improvements on chemical or nuclear facility.
  • Demonstrable project delivery experience.
  • Broad experience of process technologies and equipment.
  • Collaborative working in multi-disciplined teams leading to successful project outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, reporting, presentation, negotiation, and customer facing skills.
  • Ability to assess problems, feasibility and develop practical solutions.
  • Sound knowledge of current health and safety legislation, company safety instructions, procedures, and management systems.
  • Knowledge of up-to-date industrial practices and appreciation of international standards relating to engineering and design.
  • Capable of producing high quality technical documentation including functional and technical specifications and project documentation.
  • Ability to maintain and develop own technical knowledge to ensure the best cost effective and safe solutions are proposed and implemented.
  • Capable of exercising authority in the control of contractors and suppliers.
