Senior Estimator

Job Description Position: Estimator/ Senior Estimator
Reporting to: Estimating Director
Job Summary
To prepare analytical estimates from first principles and all necessary associated data required to produce work-winning tender bids on behalf of the Company. Review tender information to assess workscope taking off accurate quantities where necessary, compile comprehensive enquires for subcontractors and other resources utilising all available tender information to remove ambiguity.
Assign work as necessary to other members of the Estimating team. Evaluate quotations from suppliers and, where necessary, enter into correspondence with suppliers to bring quotations in line with the project specification requirements. Tender estimates summarising the net cost of work are to be prepared in good time to meet tender deadlines and allow an adjudication of the bid by relevant directors. Submit bids in accordance with ITT instructions ensuring that all aspects of the tender have been addressed in a professional manner.
Principal accountabilities
SAFETY
• Show leadership in safety excellence when visiting site with correct appearance (PPE) and behaviours.
• Ensure that health and safety is adequately addressed during the tender process and that sufficient resources are allocated to the tender for final adjudication.
• Never compromise on safety standards or place commercial interests ahead of the safety of those affected by the companies works.
CUSTOMER
• Provide the client with a first-class customer service, liaise closely maintaining good relationships and communicate regularly to generate new business opportunities.
• Follow up on tender submissions with regular communication with the client to demonstrate a keen interest in all the bids and take opportunity to promote the company as the contractor of choice.
• Ensure that we can demonstrate that we not only meet the Client’s expectations, but also exceed them in terms of achieving value for money.
• Attend pre-contract / pre-ward meetings with prospective clients to finalise tender queries and settle tender sum as necessary
PEOPLE
• Manage members of the Estimating team in a fair and honest way and carry out performance management and appraisals as required
• Work collaboratively with the operations, commercial, procurement and finance teams, provide necessary tender information required to properly complete their work
• Support the Operations team with relevant tender information, advising where applicable
• Participate in regular internal tender review meetings to monitor tender progress
• Provide headline information or summary reports to the Board on all aspects of tender bids.
• Take an active involvement in the mentoring of Estimating staff

• Ensure risk and opportunities are captured and equally identified at tender so that operations and commercial teams can maximise value / minimise cost.
• Ability to work on concurrent tender opportunities without detriment to the quality or accuracy of tender bids.

• Assist in the management and coordination of environmental, social and financial demands and concerns to ensure responsible, ethical and ongoing success of the company
• Identify tender opportunities for reducing contract programme to ensure resources are efficiently utilised resulting in lower carbon footprints.
• Supporting innovative thinking and promote imaginative ways to demonstrate an approach to recycling and re-use of materials whenever suitable opportunities arise.
• Seek suitable opportunities at tender stage from local supply chain to support Social Value aspects of tenders.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
• HND/HNC in Civil Engineering or other technically-related subject
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in estimating practice
• Minimum 5 years’ on-site experience within a water/wastewater utility organisation
• Proven financial and commercial management skills
• Good working knowledge of CESMM, HWMM, SMM7
• Good working knowledge of NEC forms of Contract Skills and knowledge
• Understanding of civil engineering especially water, wastewater, highways and groundworks.
• A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products / internet and email
• Excellent skills in estimating software such as Valesco, Causeway, Conquest or Candy.
• A good understanding of safe working practices / basic H&S requirements

• Problem solver – can apply a range of analytical techniques to understand complex information issues. Considers a range of options and their effects
• Ability to persuade others using logic and reason

• Able to produce tenders on lump sum, re-measurable and schedule of rates basis.
