Safety Engineer

Location: Stevenage, Hybrid Working

Rate: £60 ph Umbrella

Duration: 12 Months

Inside IR35

SC Clearance required.

An opportunity has arisen for an engineer to exploit their safety engineering skills to influence the safety aspects of one of our technically complex products. While exploring the boundaries of best practice, this will involve optimising the effort devoted to safety assurance, with the goal of balancing safety against the inherently lethal attributes required of complex weapon systems.

Responsibilities:

The role is to deliver the safety analysis and assurance that will enable one of our products to be integrated onto a small range of platforms. This will involve working closely with internal delivery teams, as well as UK and non-UK customers. The successful candidate will be required to liaise with key stakeholders (including, but not necessarily limited to, external customers, the platform authorities and stakeholders within the organisation) to help define the safety boundary for the development of the organisation’s safety claims and take a leading role in the production and evolution of the associated Safety Management Plans and delivery of the required safety analyses. The main emphasis will be on ensuring that the available evidence fulfils the need and, if gaps are identified, defining suitable mitigations.

In support of this, experience of the following is expected:

Essential

  • Hazard identification exercises (such as SWIFT and HAZOP);
  • Hazard management and risk analysis, including functional failure, fault tree and event tree analyses;
  • Thorough understanding and experience of how the hazard analysis process integrates with the system engineering process to influence the design.
  • Construction of safety arguments and their contribution to ALARP statements and authoring of Safety Cased Reports;
  • Provision of support to internal and external project Safety Panels and Committees;
  • Liaising with other functions in order to derive safety requirements and hazards;
  • Working with systems teams in order to demonstrate satisfaction of safety requirements;
  • Understanding of DEF-STAN 00-056 (and, ideally, other similar international standards), including the ability to define and write Safety Management Plans that meet its requirements;

Desirable

  • Detailed electronic engineering experience is highly desirable. Experience of other engineering disciplines (especially software)
  • IEC 61508/DO178C/DO-254 experience.
  • Track record as an effective team player with strong interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary / multi-national team.
