Systems Safety Engineer

12 month contract

The Principal Engineer – Product Safety shall provide support to the Engineering Delivery Manager in the development, delivery and maintenance of the Project Product Safety Management System and Product Safety Case to ensure Products are safe to own and legal to operate.

Core Duties:

  • Provide technical leadership of the derivation and management of Product Safety requirements
  • Provide technical leadership and input into the development, implementation and maintenance of the Safety Management System
  • Provide technical leadership and input into the production of Project Safety Management Plans
  • Provide technical leadership and input into Product Safety hazard and risk identification, management and assessment activities
  • Provide technical leadership and input into the construction and delivery of the Project Safety Case including Safety Case reports
  • Interface with the Safety and Engineering expertise and with other key stakeholders, providing technical leadership of the provision of Safety Engineering advice
  • Provide authoritative advice in response to customer (internal and external) technical queries, design changes, maintenance returns, events and hazards and undertake safety analysis and assessment as required
  • Provide SQEP support and technical leadership to Safety Committees
  • Provide technical leadership into construction and development of the Project Product Safety Case including Safety Case Reports
  • Provide technical leadership and input into auditable reviews and updates to Safety Management System and Project Safety Case where appropriate
  • Provide input into relevant Product Safety related plans and schedules for project management

Key Accountabilities:

  • Safety Management System development and maintenance including Process updates.
  • Production of Safety Management Plans. 
  • Hazard identification and management.
  • Risk assessment.
  • Product Safety case production.
  • Technical report writing.

Subject Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Professional chartership or working towards.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of design, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and testing submarines lifecycle phases.
  • MS Office proficient – Word, Excel etc.
  • Awareness of the challenges posed by the environment that the product will be exposed to.
  • The ability to analyse complex problems and identify the most critical issues.
  • Ability to interpret technical data and produce clear, logical and robust safety arguments.
