Case Study: Durham East Coast

Vital Security Solutions secured a contract to supply SIA security operatives to patrol the perimeter and all track accesses from Stranton to Hall Dene within this re-signalling scheme.

The patrol area covered 10 miles of actual rail lines and 22 miles of road accesses. The primary scope included:

  • SIA Operatives
  • 24/7 Security Shifts
  • Full Security Management

Project Details

Due to the size of the area to be covered Vital placed a full time Security Manager on site to organise rotas and patrol regimes and to liaise with Network Rail, Invensys and BTP. The Security Manager also carried out announced and unannounced site inspections and spot checks to ensure all staff were working correctly.

Vital supplied patrolling teams for day and night shifts, 7 days a week for the duration of the contract. All patrols were mobile in high visibility patrol vehicles including 4x4s and all night patrols carried night vision optics. The site was constantly moving and therefore forward planning was required for strategic placement of the Security teams and their patrol routes. Weekly meetings with the Construction Managers for each area identified hot spots and formed the basis of the patrol regimes implemented.

All security teams kept daily logs of all activity that identified any issues and all incidents were reported, with BTP advised regarding anything that was deemed serious.

The presence of Vital, the security service delivered and the constant patrols culminated in the project and its commissioning being completed on time.
