What is Security Clearance?
Security Clearance describes the approved measures taken to assess and confirm the eligibility of personnel in a variety of security-sensitive positions.
There are different levels of Security Clearance. Depending on the industry, position or site location, personnel could be instructed to receive a specified level of clearance in order to meet the contract requirements.
There are currently four levels of Security Clearance in operation:
BPSS | Baseline Personnel Security Standard
A BPSS check is a pre-employment check, regarded by employers as a secure representation of an individual’s eligibility to fulfil a position. The required documentation is completed in full by the individual and will cover topics such as: personal information, criminal record check, employment history, worker eligibility checks and educational history, amongst others.
SC | Security Check
SC Clearance is the most common level of clearance required by organisations. It can be applied for online, by the individual and is specifically intended for those who require access to ‘SECRET’ assets, or occasional controlled access to ‘TOP SECRET’ assets. The application for this level of clearance is more exploratory and includes a Credit Reference check and Security Service check.
CTC | Counter-Terrorist Check
A CTC is required for individuals working with sensitive data or material that could be vulnerable to terrorist attack. This also applies to roles located within, or in close proximity to, governmental establishments and public figures. It does not allow access to protectively marked assets, although there are additional checks that would allow a degree of accessibility.
DV | Developed Vetting
DV Clearance is the highest level of security clearance achievable. The application process is detailed, and follows stringent protocols including an interview with a vetting officer. DV Clearance allows individuals unsupervised access to ‘TOP SECRET’ assets. Certain types of DV Clearance are transferable and has an expiry date.

Ensuring company information is secure is of paramount importance to all businesses. A growing number of projects across the UK and Europe now require personnel with increasingly specific or high-level Security Clearance.
Security Clearance is typically required if personnel are to gain access to sensitive information, data, systems, establishments or figures of governmental or public importance.
How do I get it?
To obtain Security Clearance you must be sponsored by an organisation that holds ‘List X’ status, or that has an approved ‘List X’ facility.
A List X site is a non-government facility based within the UK that is approved to hold UK government Protectively Marked Information, classed as ‘Confidential’ and above. The List X status is applied to an organisation’s facility, and not the organisation itself.
You will only be sponsored to receive specific levels of Security Clearance if it is a direct contractual requirement for a new position, or a project within a governmental site location. There must always be a stated need for Security Clearance before the security team makes an application.
