Mechanical Engineer – Installation Components

Warrington, Manchester or Derby / Hybrid

£40,000 - £55,000 + Excellent benefits

We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer to be involved in delivering an industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of nuclear power station.

What we’re looking for

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing structural components for the SMR containment, collaborating with the Reactor Island Integration team. Your work will involve contributing to critical path components with numerous system and component interfaces.

The role will involve developing and understanding technical and through-life requirements of systems, structures, and components (SSCs), performing optioneering studies to determine optimal design, manufacturing, and construction solutions in keeping with the SMR modular build philosophy.

As we strive to find the best fit for this position, we are seeking individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. But we’ll let you in on a secret: there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Key selection criteria for this role are:

We would like you to have experience or expertise in several of the following areas, but we do not expect you to possess all of them:

Familiarity with ASME Design Codes:

Candidates with a strong understanding of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Design Codes will be well-suited to the position.

Experience in the development of design solutions from initial concept through to detailed design definition, including experience of implementing trade-off/optioneering studies to ensure an optimum solution is produced.

Proficiency in designing for through-life operation, testing, inspection, repair, and replacement of large fabricated and mechanical assemblies.

Experience in Pressure Vessels and Systems

Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and supply chain partners for sub-contracted work packages, to achieve a single integrated solution that ensures the containment vessel (and supporting components) meets the needs of interfacing systems as well as other factors arising from environmental, safety, security and Safeguarding (E3S), in line with Relevant Good Practice (RGP).

Proficiency in Manufacturing Processes

The ability to work with manufacturing processes, including welding, machining, and metal forming techniques, is important.

Experience in heavy manufacturing is a valuable asset, given the nature of our operations.

Experience in the Nuclear Industry

We are seeking candidates with ideally a background in the nuclear industry or a highly regulated industry.

Knowledge of Structural Integrity Methodology

An understanding of structural integrity methodology and assessment.

Knowledge of materials behaviour and through-life degradation.

Familiarity with UK Regulatory Expectations

Candidates with knowledge of UK regulatory expectations and safety case methodology, particularly within the nuclear industry, are encouraged to apply.

Qualification

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

Pay and Benefits

In addition to the salary, there is also a performance related bonus of up to 12.5%, and an attractive pension scheme with 12% employer and 6% employee contributions. You will also receive a flexible benefits allowance of £2,200, enabling you to create a bespoke package to suit your needs.

It will provide consistent baseload generation for at least 60 years, helping to support the roll out of renewable generation and overcome intermittency issues
