Location: Northeast Lincolnshire

The client:

My client is one of the largest independent power generators in the UK and Ireland, with an asset base that covers multiple technologies, including Gas Power, Bioenergy & Hydrogen plants across the UK & Ireland.

An opportunity has now arisen within their Maintenance department to recruit a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer for their largest CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) in the North East.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the mechanical maintenance and engineering activities of the site to meet production, business and Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) targets, whilst providing technical leadership in the mechanical discipline.

They will support the site team with the management of plant overhauls whilst maintaining close liaison to make efficient use of people resources, and will have direct responsibility for the improvement of asset performance and technician level colleagues.

The successful candidate will also be required to run and manage multi-discipline projects, setting and working to agreed budgets, operate to procurement standards and be financially and commercially competent.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the key responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Responsibility for asset performance improvement and technical support of the reliability team leader with regard to HS&E performance, production performance and asset security in order to deliver agreed power generation production plans in line with customer requirements in a safe and cost-effective manner. 
  • Being the technical expert on site responsible for writing specifications and developing plant modifications of a minor nature for implementation by the site maintenance team or contracted specialist labour, whilst ensuring process safety standards are maintained, promoting continuous improvement in environmental performance for demonstration of commitment to the ISO14001 externally certified EMS, and ensuring that risk assessments are completed on all activities as per the Safe System of Work. 
  • Responsibility for the effective procurement of parts and services through developing technical specifications, assessing tender returns and securing budget approval for expenditure to support the delivery of the maintenance strategy. 
  • Providing technical excellence and leadership with investigation, analysis and management of plant problems and issues to achieve continuous improvement in plant engineering and maintenance, whilst participating in audits to ensure compliance with company policy and procedures. 
  • Contributing to the development, implementation and delivery of the site business plan, site maintenance budget and life cycle analysis, risk management plan, Business Management System (BMS), system audit and other relevant senior management activities to ensure delivery of strategic and business goals.
  • Supporting and reviewing the team’s delivery through effective use of the performance management system and utilisation of station resources against the business plan and work programme, altering and allocating resources accordingly, whilst interfacing with other teams to ensure the overall station requirements are met.
  • Working with the Engineering team to effectively plan and manage the delivery of outages to time, quality and budget to ensure integrity and to meet business and outage plans. 
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication networks within own and wider team, ensuring business objectives and activities are clear, understood, and best practice is shared through preparation and participation in team and toolbox talks and site meetings to keep staff appraised of events and ensure they are involved and engaged in the business.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Background

  • Engineering experience of procurement, contract and project management (essential).
  • Considerable experience in power generation, or similar industry (essential).
  • In-depth knowledge and proven track record in the management of Health, Safety & the Environment (desirable).

Behaviours

  • Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders (essential).
  • IT literate including experience with al Microsoft Office products and computerised Maintenance Management Systems (essential).

Qualifications

  • HND in appropriate engineering discipline (essential).
  • IOSH Managing Safely certificate (essential).
  • National Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) (desirable).
  • Degree in appropriate engineering discipline (desirable).
