We are currently recruiting for TIG & FCAW welders who are qualified in both processes to carry out Marine refit/repair work on Royal Naval surface ships based in Devonport dockyard.

TIG & FCAW Welder -

You'll play an integral role in ensuring the serviceability of warships and systems through detailed maintenance and refit periods by working within multi-trade teams.

This will include structural alterations and repairs on board ships.

Building structural modules from engineering drawings and technical specifications, you'll be able to align and prepare weld joints and weld structural seams to a specified weld procedure. You'll also carry out surveys and pre-refit examinations of bulkheads and Marine structural systems.

You'll have the ability to read engineering drawings and interpret work instructions and be proficient in the use of general workshop machinery and hand tools such as the use of grinders, guillotines and band saws. You will be competent with weld processes Flux-core and TIG (in mainly carbon steel and stainless Quality tested at either Lloyds or EN287) and have the ability to use basic gouge and edge preparation through grinding.

You'll also have at least one of the below qualifications:

  • Indentured Apprenticeship
  • Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in a sheet metal, structural steel or fabrication related discipline
  • Indentured or Level 2/Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in Fabrication & Welding.

Other relevant qualifications will be considered.

You will also need to have experience in the following areas:

  • A proven track record of completing work to time, cost and quality parameters.
  • Ideally will have worked in the marine industry with experience of Royal Navy ships and submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels or large commercial ships. Other relevant experience will be considered.

A weld test will be carried out on site for successful applicants in order to assess suitability this is carried out to Lloyds standard in both TIG & FCAW processes.

36 std hours a week Monday to Friday with shift and overtime a possibility.
