An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Utilities Engineer to join our clients Manchester site on a Permanent basis.

This position is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and compliance of all utilities processes and equipment including combined heat and power (CHP), natural gas, steam distribution, compressed air and water systems. The position holder will be the responsible person for the control of legionella bacteria in evaporative cooling, hot and cold water systems. Additionally the Utilities Engineer is responsible for all regulatory compliance including ATEX, Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Legionnaires disease Approved Code of Practice (L8).

Main Tasks:
* Ensures all site Utilities and systems are being operated safely and in an efficient manner in line with company policy, legislation and relevant permits
* Responsible for the planning, coordination and communication of all CHP planned maintenance and unplanned breakdown activity, reducing impact on operational activity
* On a daily basis ensure the plants utilities are operated in the most cost-effective manner, using KPI's to track efficiency, energy usage/ spend and take into consideration daily energy prices
* Responsible for raising cost saving and infrastructure improvement projects, including replacement of obsolete equipment
* Responsible for streamlining and improvement of minor and major utilities start up and shutdown procedures
* Supporting failure prevention by analysis of process trends and providing corrective advice
* Ensuring 100% availability of all site utilities to include power, steam, compressed air and water systems
* Responsible for training operators in the use of utilities and associated systems
* Conduct root cause analysis in the event of any unscheduled plant downtime or major equipment failure
* To be the responsible person for all EHS legislation relating to plant utilities including PSSR, ATEX, LOLER and L8
* Responsible for corrective actions from internal/ external safety/ environmental audits and advising on the management of change process


* An Engineering background with a minimum HNC in an operations or maintenance discipline
* Extensive working knowledge of power and steam generation to include strong working knowledge of steam cycle chemistry
* IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate would be advantageous
* BOAS qualified preferred
* Proven engineering or production management experience from a similar process industry e.g. chemicals, petrochemicals, heavy pharmaceuticals or food/ingredients
* Project management experience
* Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies (Kaizen, Lean Six Sigma)
* Sounds financial management skills for budgeting
* Excellent change management skills Adapts to changing business needs, introduces new ways of thinking and behaving, and applies new ideas
* Comfortable to manage ambiguity
* Practical approach to problem solving & timely solution execution
* Manage conflicting priorities within tight deadlines
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and present to different levels of the business
* Fully IT literate with a focus on Microsoft Excel
* ATEX/DSEAR training/ understanding would be preferred
