Systems Engineer

Location: Loudwater, Buckinghamshire

Duration: 24 weeks

Our client provides a variety of electronic products for military applications including naval combat management systems, gun fire control systems, electro-optic systems, cameras, data distribution systems, weapon interfacing electronics, Sonar Systems & Decoy Systems. In addition they have moved into a Prime Contract Management role providing whole platform solutions.

The Purpose of the Role:

Define and manage the requirement definition, implementation, verification and validation of a complex solution to ensure it fulfils the result, outcome or effect that is intended, where the requirement should be an unambiguous statement of the capability that the system must deliver.

To conduct systems engineering activities, either alone on a small project or as part of a larger project team, adhering to Engineering Function processes or project specific tailoring of those processes.

Systems Engineers will create and sustain successful, purposeful, systems that:

  • Relate to the development and delivery of goods and services
  • Deliver real benefits to the company, suppliers and customers
  • Works with all technical domains, and all business functions

Responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering allocated tasks within budget and to timescales as agreed with the project management team
  • Conducting Systems Engineer tasks throughout the systems lifecycle consisting of:
    • Generating, understanding and reviewing user requirements documentation
    • Writing the project System Requirements Specifications
    • Developing and documenting the System architecture
    • Developing and documenting the systems design through System Design Specifications and Interface Specifications
    • Defining the system's sub-systems and their requirements including hardware and software
    • Developing and continually refining the system acceptance strategy, and verification method for each system requirement (incl. Acceptance Management Plan)
    • Ensuring the specification, design and acceptance are fully traceable
  • System testing and reporting:
    • Leading/ Assisting with system testing
    • Deriving, defining and documenting testing
    • Conducting integration testing
    • Conducting system testing (informal and formal)
  • Configuration and Data Management
  • Process Compliance
    • Adhere to the company's systems engineering processes and procedures.
  • Supporting the safety verification process as required
  • Support planning through input to project schedule by estimating tasks and adhere to agreed estimates/timescales
  • Supports Bids by providing input on technical solutions, estimates and plans

Proven Ability / Key Skills


  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering best practices, common pitfalls, methodologies, processes and tools
  • Appreciation of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering
  • Knowledge of the Systems Engineering lifecycles
  • Awareness of safety issues
  • Proven ability of Systems Engineering in the defence industry or other relevant environment
  • Knowledge of the use of Systems Engineering tools as well as the whole Systems lifecycle
  • Proven ability of conducting engineering activities in accordance with structured business processes
  • Ability to write clear, concise, well structured, technical documents
  • Use of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to assimilate knowledge quickly across various technical disciplines


  • Knowledge of Software Engineering best practices and common pitfalls
  • Knowledge of fundamental project management practices (e.g. Planning estimating, risk management et al)
  • Knowledge of electronic systems used in the defence industry (e.g. Radar, communication, weapon, fire control, decoy, surveillance)
  • Knowledge of legislative arena from an engineering perspective
  • Knowledge of the operational and organisation structure of the UK or similar armed forces, especially Naval
  • Knowledge of Naval Command & Control systems especially Electro-Optical of Radar Surveillance
  • Proven ability of:
    • Working with Airborne C2 tactical data links (Link 11/Link 16)
    • Working with military Systems preferably in the Naval/Marine Domain
    • The DOORS requirements management tool
    • Software development, including scripting for test tools
    • Networking standards and LAN switch configuration
    • Planning and conducting all levels of integration and unit testing
    • Conducting system commissioning, integration and acceptance tests
    • Using of IBM DOORS
    • Using System Modelling tools
    • Using Matlab & Simulink
  • Ability to multi-task, including working on more than one project concurrently
