To undertake a defined range of engineering activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements, supplying advice and support to operations and other functions and/or to organise and co-ordinate aspects of engineering activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.
Possesses in-depth knowledge of all aspects within his/her discipline.
Able to perform robust analysis using recognised analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.
Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions
Typically degree qualified (not essential) , in a technology, engineering or science related discipline
A least four years post graduate engineering experience
Meet the requirements for registration As Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council and preferably be a member of a relevant Professional Body Common Competencies:
Tasks and Activities:
Participate fully in developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
Carry out relatively complex technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.
Prepare specifications, develop designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carry out design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained.
Carry out investigations into operational problems or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a project team.
Act as the main point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve relatively complex problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.
Support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in area(s) of expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids.
Knowledge and competence in ship structural design including the derivation of scantlings. Some experience in the structural design of frigate-type vessels. Some knowledge of the use of Classification Society rules and processes, preferably Lloyd's Register Naval Ship Rules.
Sound capability in general structural theory and analysis and its application to ship structures.
Capable of producing accurate scantling and general structural calculations.
Capable of producing accurate weight and quantity calculations.
Ability to assess and check structural drawings.
Ability to produce appropriate design sketches.
Knowledge of general and structural calculation software.
Awareness of shipyard production and fabrication processes and issues with respect to structural design and analysis.
Awareness of finite element analysis, its application and assessment.
Awareness of general ship design issues concerning frigate-type vessels.
Ability to produce clear and comprehensive reports and other documents as required by the project. Capable of taking part in discussions with project and external personnel.
Capable of estimating time and resources for structural design activities within the overall structures team budget and programme.
System calculations, diagrams and drawings supporting Design and assessment tasks, specific to own discipline.
