Technology Systems Software Engineer - Oxfordshire - 9 Months

Overall Purpose:
Primarily responsible to support STEP related activities in the Materials Science and Scientific Computing department in developing systems engineering software.

Accountabilities:
Systems Engineering (Core Area)
* Support projects by helping to establish requirements, through to design evaluation and optimisation. The post-holder will focus upon projects that necessitate automated parametric design, multiple domain / multi-physics analysis, machine learning and high-performance computing using modern and often novel methods (e.g. OpenStack cloud infrastructure). They will be responsible for exploiting advances in Big Data and Extreme Scale Computing, playing a pioneering role in the development of the Authoritys systems engineering tools and procedures as we move into the ITER era.
* Be responsible for the development and documentation of systems engineering software, simulation within multiple domains, processes & data that govern the technical work of systems development typical key areas include requirements capture & management, system architecture development, interfacing to established simulations codes, model generation, model evaluation and design optimisation.
* Contribute to the definition, introduction and continuous improvement of computational aspects of systems engineering processes & tools within the organisation. Promote and support the usage of modern tools and methods through the provision of self-explanatory user interfaces and application programming interfaces.
* Research, capture, develop and maintain requirements for system engineering solutions.
* Develop and maintain the functional and physical architectures / definitions of systems.
* Requirements Management in software development projects (documenting, analysing, tracing, prioritising and agreeing upon requirements and then controlling change and communicating to relevant stakeholders throughout projects). Ensure that the development process is continually requirements-driven, and that requirements are rigorously verified both in design and the finished product).
* Modelling and Simulation-based Systems Engineering (MBSE - formalised application of modelling to support system requirements, architecting/design, analysis, activities beginning in the conceptual design phase and continuing throughout development through to product, implementation of systems models and support for validation and verification.)
Concept Development & Evaluation (Core Area)
* Undertake system architecture studies to identify preferred & optimal candidate solutions, taking into account design trade-offs between new technology opportunities & risks, requirements, HPC deployability and scope for reuse in future projects.
* Systems Architecture / Architecting (Creating conceptual models, defining structure and behaviours of the required system, enabling decomposition of complex systems etc. Identification of physics/domain models required by systems modelling).
* Virtual Prototyping (Evaluation of concepts through the use of high level virtual models), development of Digital Twin technology and models etc. Using emerging techniques in HPC and High Performance Data Analytics.
* Optioneering (Carrying out a balanced and thorough assessment of the potential solutions, against the relevant criteria with appropriate weightings, to establish the approach that should be taken).

Specific Qualifications/Experience:
Essential:
* Strong computation background, preferably with experience in Computer Aided Simulation techniques.

Desirable:
* Recognised specialised degree in related nuclear engineering or nuclear physics.
* Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in related engineering or physics subject, preferably fusion technology/engineering.
* Previous experience of working in an international fusion research environment or other big engineering field with a track record in exploiting MBSE (space, Formula 1, oil & gas etc.).
* Has a broad knowledge of fusion or fission science & technology and a track record of publications in the field of fusion technology or engineering with at least two years post doctorial experience.
