This role is predominantly days, but backshifts and nights are also available as part of this role and details on rates are below.

Position -

Based in HM Naval base Portsmouth (PNB), My clients Small Boat business is set up to manufacture and repair a wide range of military specification small boats for both the Ministry of Defence and other military and commercial customers. A Shipwright will work within the manufacturing department of Small Boats. The work will cover boat refit, repairs, operational defects and upgrades.

Safely and professionally deliver planned and reactive maintenance on a variety of craft within the key performance indicator criteria while adhering to the working time directive.

The Shipwright position is one that is key to the success of the operation. Working alongside Mechanical Fitters, Laminators and Electricians, the multi-skilled trades work closely alongside each other to undertake the individual boat work packages. Shipwrights specialise in the manufacture, repair and maintenance of various boat related hull, structure, systems and equipment, mechanical and associated ancillary equipment (excluding the engine, water jet, gearbox and propeller drive train) fitted to the range of small boats, manufactured and repaired within the SBCE facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities -

  • Shipwright competency to be measured at a minimum of 60% against MS Shipwright competencies
  • Demonstrate strong SHE working practices, high standards, behaviour modelling across all areas
  • Integrates SHE activities into daily working. Carry out a Trade specific Take 5 plus 5 dynamic risk assessment before every task.
  • Provide visible active commitment to SHE - leading by example, acting on SHE concerns.
  • Abide by all risk assessments, BAE policies and the law
  • Ensure all tools and equipment that are used are suitable, fit for purpose and in date for any inspection required
  • Attend all training courses, TBT and briefings where possible
  • Carry out installation / removal / repair / maintenance / replacement of hull related equipment maintenance and defect rectification in accordance with the project schedules to meet customer quality expectations
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with customers by managing their expectations and needs
  • Complete works as detailed by Leading Hand and Team Manager
  • Report all accidents, incidents and near misses via the appropriate reporting tool
  • May have a business issued mobile phone to support working capability
  • Read/Interpret Shipwright Drawings
  • Fault diagnosis and defect rectification
  • Carry out detailed inspections and be fully conversant in the use of all measuring equipment's
  • Use of calibrating measurement equipment.
  • Operation of common workshop plant/hand tooling; e.g.: Fixed drills, grinders, jigsaws, torque wrenches, presses, cleaning tanks etc.
  • Working to tight deadlines, clean working.
  • Right first time principles.
