Our client is the UK's leading engineering support services organisation and employs more than 34,000 people around the world. At the Devonport site they operate the largest Naval Dockyard in Western Europe where they provide engineering support to surface ships and nuclear submarines.

The Welding Design section provides technical expertise and support to all projects across the Dockyard and the wider business. Workload continues to increase due to a growing demand for welding engineering support and development projects on structure and pipework across the surface fleet, submarine platforms and facilities.

The Senior Welding Engineer role is a 12 month contract to provide subject matter expertise and technical management across the business. The purpose of the role is to allow existing staff to focus on specific development projects, while the Senior Welding Engineer continues to provide welding support to project and production through the running of PQRs to BS EN ISO 15614.

As such the candidate will need an expert level of welding and metallurgy knowledge and its application to ship and submarine structure and systems.

The Senior Welding Engineer will support the technical output of a team of experienced welding engineers. The team's activities include: the development and authorisation of technical welding instructions weld procedure development review of sub-contractor welding management systems and procedures and validation of welding consumables.

The Senior Welding Engineer will also have the opportunity to work with junior members of the team to develop their technical and management development.

As such the candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills with an ability to be concise when communicating complex technical information, as well as being competent working within a team of mixed ability.

They will have experience working with ISO, ASME and Defence Standards with a nuclear dockyard environment.

It is expected that they will have at least five years' experience in a Welding Engineering role or similar.
The following qualifications are required:
* Bachelor degree, with Honours, in relevant engineering discipline
* TWI Diploma in Welding Engineering or equivalent i.e. MSc in Welding Engineering
* Incorporated/Chartered Engineer

The following qualifications are desirable:
* CSWIP 3.1 Visual Inspection
* PCN Level 2 in Radiographic Interpretation
* International/European Welding Engineer
