Purpose of role:
Platform Engineer responsible for the integration of the CH-148 Cyclone helicopter system within the programme. Covering all aspects of the operational, functional and physical/engineering for the helicopter, its handling and weapons system integration with the ship, leading to full authorised flying clearance. This includes launch, recovery, stowage, communications, tactical integration, drills, emergencies, weapons handling, fuelling, hangar maintenance and helicopter handling.
The role holder will have some knowledge of the integration of a helicopter as a system with the ship (this is desirable but not essential). The role will cover the life cycle from design, manufacture to sea and flying trials leading to ultimate clearance for flying operations.
The role will require a knowledge and awareness of the stakeholders and the process leading to authorisation.
The role holder will cover functional, physical and engineering integration of the helicopter and its weapons into the ship and an understanding of the factors influencing the design intent of those systems as the programme progresses through detail design, into build and commissioning.
CAD and 3D modelling skills are desirable.
The role holder should work effectively, with minimum supervision and show sound understanding of budget constraints and schedule milestones.
2 years+ experience of Design / Detail Design effort or equivalent experience in a heavy industrial/marine environment
Previous aviation experience in Helicopter integration desirable
Previous experience on other projects of complexity (new build)
Customer/end user experience desirable.
Ideally degree qualified in Platform Engineering or related discipline.
Experience to Chartered or Incorporated Engineer Standard + 2 years.
Experience in Platform engineering design roles.
Tasks and Activities
Physical adaptation of the ship for the handling system.
Confirmation and any necessary modification of a satisfactory air wake for helo operations.
Functional integration of the helo and weapon systems with the ship, including combat systems and flying impact on weapons and sensors.
Engineering changes to supporting systems and services.
Production and review of aviation equipment TESs, SOWs and assessment of suppliers.
Adaptation of the hangar and aviation compartments for MH60R, weapons, and stowage of associated equipment.
Development of wholeship operating procedures and identification and implementation of resulting changes on the platform design. Including launch, recovery, handling, weapons, emergency scenarios, communications, tactical integration, refuelling and maintenance.
Assurance of operating compatibility of the helo with other ship scenarios such as boat operation.
Attend Aviation Working Groups.
Investigation of UAV capability as directed by the project.
Assist in planning and execution of the process and trials required for acceptance and flying clearance.
Liaison with external authorities for acceptance and operational flying clearance.
Assist in the maintenance of design intent through spatial integration including approval / authorisation of engineering documents and change requests, overseeing of design intent reviews etc.
Liaise with external agencies ( the customer, approval authorities & subcontractors) to deliver outputs and the wider project milestones on schedule
Demonstrate potential and contribute to the project and the business.
Assist compartment owner with responsibility for Aviation compartments.
Role is Glasgow based but will involve both local and overseas travel.
Delivery of the physical and engineering changes required in the platform for successful integration in all respects of the helicopter and weapon system with the ship.
Assisting in planning and execution of the process leading to operation flying clearance for the CSC class.
Assisting with the delivery of the development of associated operating and safety cases.
Engagement with all authorising bodies and stakeholders.
Oversight and engagement with suppliers for aviation equipment and design changes to ensure quality, on time deliverables.
Provision of effective liaison support to build through to trials.
Knowledge of the nature of the work in all phases of the engineering life cycle especially with regard to the achievement of project phase milestones. Understands the relationship between activities in different phases of the engineering lifecycle.
