Electrical or Mechatronic Degree

5+ years' experience in the design & deployment of Process Control / Automation Solutions

Experience of developing Ship Propulsion solutions

Experience of working on large, complex projects in a multi-disciplinary, matrix management environment


Electrical Engineering Safety Qualifications/Experience

Experience of working on Naval projects

Working Knowledge of Royal Naval Marine Operating Practices and Procedures

Working knowledge of Project LCM processes & tools

Working knowledge of Project Management reporting


Electrical or Mechatronic Degree

Chartered or Incorporated Engineer

5-10 years' experience of design effort, or equivalent experience, in a heavy industrial/marine environment

Technical Knowledge

Knowledge and experience in use of ship design processes and systems to LCM guidelines

Knowledge of Project Management techniques (EV, CPI, SPI, Risk etc.)

Capabilities to co-ordinate the engineering management work required to carry out PPMS functions

Ability to assure the Chief Engineer that quality, cost and technical compliance of scheduled activities are achieved in line with the agreed programme of work

Business Expertise

Work with Head of Project to deliver all aspects of engineering deliverables including Stage 1 & Stage 2/3 (TBD) Design, and Change, PQ closure, NC closure, etc.

Be aware of need to deliver engineering effort to budget and schedule

Co-ordinate effort to deliver physical integration strategies

Manage disputes occurring both internally and externally which impact the P&P team

Endorse recommendations to the customer for design decisions, contract placement and cost model updates

Provide discipline interface to other disciplines / areas of the business

Problem Solving

Broad knowledge of the nature of the work in all phases of the engineering life cycle especially with regard to the achievement of project phase milestones. Understands the relationship between activities in different phases of the engineering lifecycle

Broad knowledge of how to perform problem definition for the whole system/problem, identifying implicit and explicit boundaries, interfaces, constraints and requirements in own business area. Able to decompose the system/problem into manageable chunks and to assess the implications of proposed changes on technical, operational and commercial aspects of the complete system or project

Good understanding of project management concepts, principles and techniques and effectively translate them to large and/ or complex projects. Skilled in ensuring that you and your function contribute effectively throughout the project lifecycle

Broad knowledge of how to proactively identify, manage and mitigate product safety issues across the product/service area

Conversant with methods and tools used to assess product safety and understands their capabilities and limitations. Thorough knowledge of regulatory and statutory safety requirements across the product/service area. Able to pass this knowledge on to others and to review assessments produced by less experienced staff

Understands the main ingredients of functional capability management and the benefits of striving for functional excellence. Appreciates the need to develop people, processes and tools and the consequences of not managing functional capability effectively

Appreciates the need for a supportability engineering process to sustain the long term viability of the business. Understands that supportability goes beyond basic design, maintenance and operability requirements.


Liaise with external agencies (the customer, approval authorities & subcontractors) to develop and oversee the delivery and maintenance of I/O schedules for the Propulsion equipment

Provide engineering expertise to the delivery of projects/programmers that are likely to have a value in excess of millions of pounds and have a significant headcount

Lead engineering resource including the delivery of engineering work using an Integrated Team with multiple interfaces with customers and suppliers

Support development of engineering design and production output data for the project, including responsibility for the Stage 1 Engineering Team within cost, schedule and quality targets

Wider project milestones, in line with the agreed schedule.
