Make engineering decisions within sphere of responsibility and delegated authority. Familiar with more than one aspect of the life cycle. Have the ability to carry out complex technical analyses and investigations. Prepare complex specifications and deliver packages of work as part of cross functional projects/investigations ensuring requirements are delivered according to plan. Liaise with customers and support the identification of future business opportunities. Have a good awareness of their own business strategy and legal regulatory obligations.
Able to perform robust analysis using recognised analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.
Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions
Typically degree qualified (not essential), likely to be in a technology, engineering or science related discipline
A least four years post graduate engineering experience
Meet the requirements for registration As Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council and preferably be a member of a relevant Professional Body
Tasks and Activities:
Perform linear-elastic FEA of steel structures as assigned.
Using local sub-modelling techniques identify local stress issues and provide suitable design solutions.
Undertake FEA of significant ship sections and apply multiple load cases in accordance with project guidelines.
Perform modal analyses of steel structure.
Document analyses in accordance with Client standards with the minimum of intervention.
Knowledge and competence in linear-elastic Finite-Element Analysis of structures, preferably ships or marine vehicles. Specific expertise in use of Hypermesh and ABAQUS software.
Develop FE model,
Identify and idealise accurately the loads and boundary conditions,
Run analyses (linear elastic or modal),
Verify results via hand calculations and standard methods,
Interrogate results and assess integrity of structure,
Identify design solutions where applicable,
Produce technical documentation and reports in both Word and Excel formats.
Ability to work efficiently within an engineering team in the preparation and production of detailed FEA models as required by the programme of work.
Have the experience and depth of knowledge of steel structures to assess, check and report on analyses performed by other team members.
Basic knowledge of ship and general structural design and awareness of Classification Society rules and processes.
Capable of estimating and planning individual FE analyses within the overall structures team budget and programme.
Ability to produce clear and comprehensive reports and other documents as required by the project. Capable of clearly presenting analysis results at technical meetings and demonstrate professionalism and confidence while discussing technical details with project and external personnel.
