Job Description
To develop current and next generation aircraft products and technologies, numerous opportunities exist for those interested in the challenges across several lifecycle phases. The programme has provided a significant increase in Design Engineering resource demand. In the delivery of the Air projects, we are aiming to develop, sustain and replenish Design Engineering knowledge, skills and experience. The purpose of this vacancy description is to establish a role to be deployed on other Air programmes, related tasks across the range of Design Engineering skills.

Air Sector is the part of BAE Systems responsible for the design, development, manufacture, clearance and in-service support of fixed wing combat and training aircraft, and unmanned air vehicles. We also provide training, support and information services for the UK RAF and other customers worldwide.
The Airframe Design Engineering Discipline is responsible for producing the physical product definition against a set of system functional requirements from multiple sources. The capabilities of Design Engineers comprise a range of sub-skills in the creation of solutions to satisfy conceptual, preliminary definition and detail design, verification/compliance, build/assembly and in-service support lifecycle phases. Design deliveries are produced for manufacturing and through-life upgrades. A variety of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) applications toolset versions are used in the creation and upgrades of design definition to achieve customer requirements, in compliance with functional and business processes.
Senior Designer role responsibilities:
* Airframe Design capabilities comprise one or more of the following design technical skills areas: Concept & Configuration Design, Structural Design - Composites, Structural Design - Metallics, Mechanical Systems Design, Fluid Systems Design, Electrical Circuits Design, Electrical Installation Design, Build & In-Service Design Support, Computer Aided Design, Components Engineering.
* Analysing information and applying sound engineering judgement to solve problems.
* Need to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of stakeholders.
* Working with external customers, suppliers and partners.
* Managing Design tasks to meet design review criteria and programme schedules.
* Working in a multidisciplinary integrated product development environment influencing adjacent Airframe and Systems disciplines.
* Applying relevant engineering and design standards and processes to product definition.

WORKING HOURS


- 5 days p/wk (Mon-Fri) around relevant site core hours (7am - 6pm Mon - Thurs, 7am - 12.30pm Fri).

- Hours required to work per week are 37.00 unless otherwise stated (this does not include lunch breaks).
- Start and finish times to be agreed with local Line Management, in accordance with local site core hours.
- Lunch break (unpaid) is 42 minutes which will automatically be deducted each working day from 12.30pm to 13.12pm by the electronic time management system.

- Dependant on workload, local management may request more or less hours are worked within this contract.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to perform tasks suitable to the internal level of this role. The role will contain, but will not be limited to, the following:

KRA 1 - PREPARE AND ISSUE ENGINEERING DATA TO MEET PROJECT REQUIREMENTS, IN LINE WITH DESIGN STANDARDS, WHILST MAINTAING QUALITY, COST AND SCHEDULE ADHERANCE SOP ENGINEERING DATA TO BE ISSUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AGREED PROGRAMME TIMESCALES TO A HIGH QUALITY STANDARD.

KRA2 - CHECK ENGINEERING DATA AFTER COMPLETION & PRIOR TO A FORMAL CHECK TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS.
AUTHORISED CHECKERS ARE TO CARRY OUT A FORMAL CHECK TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS. SOP DATA TO BE CHECKED AND APPROVED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT WORKING PRACTICES.

KRA 3 - LIAISE WITH IPT MEMBERS IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND CUSTOMER AREAS, FOSTERING A TEAM-WORKING AND COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT. SOP MAINTAIN AND PROMOTE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS OF CONDUCT AT ALL TIMES, AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE WORK OF THE IPT, BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL TO THE TEAM AND COMPANY. SUPPORT ALL ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BENEFIT TO THE BUSINESS.

KRA 4 - IDENTIFY RISKS & PROPOSE MITIGATION ACTION SOP FEEDBACK PROVIDED TO DESIGN TEAM LEADER.

KRA 5 - CONDUCT OR SUPPORT ALL ASPECTS OF PDR's & DEVELOPMENT PLANS. SOP REVIEWS CARRIED OUT, DEVELOPMENT PLANS AGREED.

KRA 6 - PRODUCE & EVALUATE DESIGN QUERIES AS APPROPRIATE & SUPPORT THE GENERATION OF ANY RESULTING MODIFICATIONS OR CHANGES SOP ALL QUERIES TO BE ANSWERED IN AGREED TIMESCALES.

KRA 7 - TO SUPPORT THE DEFINITION OF RESCOURCE LEVELS IN LINE WITH PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS. TO SUPPORT EFFECTIVE PLANNING & DISCHARGE OF WORKLOAD. SOP RESOURCES ALIGNED TO ACHIEVE OUTPUT.

KRA 8 - ADHERE TO THE TERMS & CONDITIONS LAID OUT IN THE MAI HANDBOOK & SUPPORTED BY THE ONE MANAGER'S BAE SYSTEMS WEB SITE. SOP ADHERENCE TO THE TERMS & CONDITIONS LAID OUT IN THE MAI HANDBOOK & SUPPORTED BY THE ONE MANAGER'S BAE SYSTEMS WEB SITE.

The Individual

the individual must have excellent Microsoft Office Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Project skills and must be good with Microsoft Outlook

Communication, Team Working and Motivation are essential

experience in an Airframe Design role.
* We are looking for candidates who typically hold a relevant engineering qualification to HNC/HND level or above.
* Experience of operating in an airframe design role preferably in one or more phases of an airframe product lifecycle desirable.
* To demonstrate a level of proficiency in CATIA V5 / Capital Logic or equivalent toolsets (dependent on role), and experience in a PLM system.
* To demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of stakeholders.
* Experience of working with external customers, suppliers and partners desirable.
* Experience of managing Design tasks to meet design review criteria and programme schedules preferable.
* Preferably candidates would have experience working in a multidisciplinary integrated product development environment influencing adjacent Airframe and Systems disciplines.
* Experience in leading/guiding other Design staff preferable.
* Ideally candidates would have experience in independent design checking/approval.
