Job Accountabilities

  • Develop new or existing software as part of research projects
  • Diagnose problems and propose solutions considering both technical and human factors
  • Work with scientists and engineers to understand project requirements and discuss potential areas for collaboration
  • Manage own tasks over days or weeks with attention to quality and timescales
  • Provide software development and research computing help and support to scientists and engineers
  • Help improve software development practices and quality standards across the organisation by contributing to training, guidance and community building activities.
  • Engage with relevant research and RSE communities to communicate the work of the team and learn from others
  • Demonstrable experience of developing working, understandable research software in more than one programming language (ideally including both interpreted and compiled languages)
  • Familiarity with good development practices such as version control and software testing
  • Ability to understand mathematical and physical concepts sufficiently to work with all parts of specialised scientific software alongside domain experts
  • Familiarity with some scientific software libraries or packages and appetite to learn and apply new technologies
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and experience of writing software for use by others
  • Working knowledge of developing and deploying software on Linux platforms
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate on projects


  • Knowledge of methods and tools for any of: data management, data and signal analysis, modelling and simulation, data visualisation
  • Familiarity with any of the commonly-used languages in our research groups: Python, C++, Fortran, IDL, Matlab, database and web technologies
  • Familiarity with Git, Gitlab/Github or similar, automated testing & CI, build systems, packaging, containerisation
  • Experience of using scientific computing platforms such as compute clusters, cloud systems
  • Experience of giving talks or helping to run events or training sessions
  • Involvement in the wider Research Software Engineering community
