The Position

Reporting to the Reactor Duty Systems Design Group Lead, the Reactor Systems Design Integration Technical Lead will be responsible for implementing systems engineering activities across the design team, ensuring consistency and balance across the system designs and leading design for operation activities.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and coordination of a small team of engineers to ensure the delivery of an integrated reactor plant systems design.  The role will involve working closely with the Engineering Integration Function to develop and improve ways of working across the system design teams, leading the development of the reactor plant operating philosophy, coordinating interfaces with other design areas and disciplines, and solving cross plant design issues.

The technical lead will have expertise in the application of systems engineering to the development of nuclear reactor systems and will lead the delivery of the designated system designs into a fully integrated product solution in accordance with requirements flowed down from the project. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply technical expertise to develop system design solutions from preliminary concept through to detailed design definition; this will include experience of trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
  • Provide technical supervision, guidance and coaching to systems engineers across the design team.   Ensure quality is maintained throughout the design process by undertaking local technical reviews and providing inputs to the main project technical review gates.
  • Define and manage engineering requirements on reactor plant components, installations, controls and instrumentation.
  • Develop and implement verification & validation strategies for the assigned reactor systems at the various stages of design maturity.
  • Collaborate with other design teams to achieve a coherent and optimised power station solution.
  • Develop and deliver detailed plans for the assigned design tasks.
  • Understand and articulate design and programme risks, managing them as appropriate with the Reactor Safety Systems Group Lead.
  • Act as technical authority for the assigned reactor systems and represent the project at technical and project reviews when required.
  • Work with due regard to Health, Safety and Environment. Comply with corporate, business and legislative requirements.  Champion company values, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Experience

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer (or equivalent) with design experience including responsibility for technically leading systems design programmes.
  • Nuclear process system design experience, including responsibility for technical and project leadership in a relevant field.
  • Excellent knowledge of reactor system design, operation and safety cases.
  • Experience in the interpretation of customer specifications and defining and managing engineering requirements.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant design codes, including systems engineering. 
  • Planning and organising skills to manage programme activities and deliverables.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy in.
