Job Summary

Quartz crystals are at the heart of the electronic payload of a satellite. They are the source of the master frequency for the satellite, providing a very stable frequency in the harsh environment of space over the 20 year lifetime required of modern satellites. The client carries out the complete manufacturing process, from growth of very high purity quartz crystals to delivery of complete Master Reference Oscillator Equipments.

The role is for a Technician to carry out lapping and polishing of quartz crystals as part of a small team


  • Polishing and Lapping of Quartz Crystals
    • This involves operating small lapping and polishing machines and cleaning the crystals with the use of solvent chemicals
  • Measurement of Quartz Crystal Frequency, Measurement systems used include;
    • network analysers
    • x-ray orientation systems
    • laser interferometers
  • Measurement of Quartz Crystal Orientation
  • Processing records and entering them into Excel
  • Reporting to Team Leader

Skills/Experience Required


  • Previous polishing / lapping experience in some capacity
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel
  • ATTENTION TO DETAIL with machine set up, operation and monitoring will be key to this role
  • PATIENCE will also be necessary for this multi-stage and complex process
  • Able to work autonomously after training


  • Experience of precision manufacturing would be an advantage, however full training will be given
  • Any experience or familiarity with the following tools;
    • lapping and polishing machines
    • Network Analysers
    • X-ray orientation systems
    • Laser Interferometers
  • Workshop experience is an advantage

Education & Training

  • Requirements for this role focus on experience but any relevant manufacturing qualifications (BTEC or equivalent in mechanical engineering discipline NVQ level3, City & Guilds etc) would be an asset
