Propulsion Technical Lead - RSS

Location: Harwell

Duration: 12 months

Rate: Negotiable DOE

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Technically lead the propulsion subsystem activities (electric and/or chemical propulsion) during Phase C/D/E for recurring satellite product line application programmes
  • Be the primary technical point of contact for the propulsion subsystem in the UK, interfacing with the PMO and satellite system teams in France, customer technical teams, AIT team in Belfast and other subsystem experts, such as Mech/Thermal, AOCS
  • Coordinate the technical teams responsible for the design justification and production of the propulsion module, with a strong systems engineering and technical management approach. This will involve, but will not be limited to:
  • Providing technical support to system level propulsion trade-offs for optimiztion of the satellite and mission design
  • Preparing subsystem design justification documentation for major design reviews throughout the project life cycle in cooperation with the Program Management Office and other subsystems (Attitude Control, Data Handling, Electrical power, structure and thermal control)
  • Establishing integration and test plans and requirements for the subsystem
  • Overseeing the propulsion module manufacture and AIT activities in UK and France
  • Technically supporting the propulsion in-flight operations during LEOP/IOT
  • Providing regular reporting of technical progress to the project team and management

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Interpreting mission/customer specific and generic system level requirements and establishing the baseline technical requirements document (TRD) for the propulsion subsystem
  • Technical monitoring and coordination of propulsion product engineering activities to follow up the equipment development/delta-qualification and deliveries for the project
  • Ensure compliance of the subsystem to the upper level satellite TRD
  • Prepare and deliver data packs and present the equipment and subsystem status at all the requested internal and external engineering reviews (EQSR, BDR, CDR, TRR etc)
  • Prepare AIT plans and test requirements for the subsystem
  • Respond to customer technical queries and track actions from meetings/reviews
  • Manage any anomalies or non-conformances occurring throughout the project life cycle at equipment or subsystem level with support from technical experts and present technical status/progress in NCRs with the customer
  • Provide engineering support to future propulsion developments and continuous improvement of our products, systems and processes
  • Perform ad-hoc additional duties that will arise from time to time that are consistent with the nature of this technical managerial position.

Proven Ability / Key Skills


  • Proven ability in the design and integration of complex fluidic systems, preferably within the space industry
  • Demonstrated technical management proven ability on engineering projects, preferably within the space industry
  • Knowledge of working in a multi-discipline and international team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers, suppliers and technical specialists to ensure a technically compliant solution.


  • Application of effective systems engineering knowledge - across the "Systems V" - to achieve critical project outcomes to time, cost and quality
  • Demonstrated ability in space projects through the full lifecycle from Phase 0/A to Phase D/E in propulsion subsystems and/or equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the state of the art electric and/or chemical propulsion subsystem technologies
  • Proven ability in the practical application of DOORS as an engineering requirements management tool
  • Communication and influencing skills to build productive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • A working knowledge of government / institutional contractual rules and forms
  • While specific knowledge of the French and Italian languages is not a prerequisite for this position it would be advantageous to facilitate activities
  • Proven ability within the space sector - candidates with an equivalent level of experience from within aerospace or similar engineering sectors are encouraged to apply
