Role Overview

There are four primary objectives relating to this role.

The first is to directly contribute to the on-going development of land & air systems UK response to emergent and changing Legislation and Standards. This will be achieved through the role holders' knowledge of these (and the many other impacting) Regulations and that person shall also contribute to the development of guidance and solutions that minimise business impact and facilitates efficient on-going management.

The second is to optimise understanding in system and product safety through development of training that appropriately considers the role that all business functions have to play in each phase of the lifecycle, concept, design, development, use, and maintenance.

The third is to support delivery of the Client's product safety goals.

This will be achieved through refinement and subsequent communication and implementation of the processes and guidance that the land & air systems UK has in place to manage the integration of Product safety engineering with Hardware, Systems, Electrical, Environmental and Materials engineering. The role will involve working with Safety Assurance Managers, the Product safety community, Design & Safety Authorities, Supply Chain and the Quality Function to ensure and assure all the client's Programmes satisfy the objective of delivering SFAIRP 'safe product'.

The role holder will have a background that encompasses:

  • Delivery of product safety tasks in project environments
  • Implementing oversight and governance
  • A wide range of knowledge covering the various dominant Standards normally associated with military and security equipment
  • Practical knowledge of product safety and risk

The fourth is to provide a focal point for product safety into and from land & air systems UK, communicating and reporting across the business.

Responsibilities/Tasks

  • To provide written reports and oral presentations on activities undertaken
  • Conduct of Audits, forensic investigation
  • Requirements - enable the business to develop responses to relevant:
    • Legislation
    • Regulation
    • Standards & customer requirements
  • Act as the focal point between land & air systems UK product safety involved communities and the wider community monitoring and communicating change in:
    • corporate governance
    • international and national Standards
    • defence and industry understanding
  • Providing advice on:
    • Integrity level definition
    • ALARP judgement
    • selecting the most appropriate tools
    • problems arising during the design, manufacture process or with the finished product
  • Compliance - helping to ensure that products comply with national and international legal and quality standards
  • Liaison - with colleagues in design, manufacturing, technical support and supply chain
  • Engagement - with practitioners, expert groups and academic institutions in the UK and overseas in the product safety field, both internal and external to the client
  • Reporting - status of product safety related activities across land & Air Systems UK
  • Training - identifying relevant external training and delivering internal training solutions commensurate with maintaining a competent and SQEP organisation and individuals
  • Supply Chain - with remit to assist in development of technical procurement documentation and undertake vendor analysis
  • Technical - provide expert response to programme queries, such as:
    • modification processes and subsequent testing
    • alternative solutions and their cost implications
    • failure analysis
  • Identify improvements to the tools and processes used to support product safety development
  • Capturing, reporting and supporting resolution of product safety issues and incidents
  • A good practical knowledge of:
    • Product Safety
    • FME(C)A, FTA, Reliability
    • MOD UK - Def Stan 00-56/POSMS
    • Risk analysis (including functional risk analysis), management and reduction techniques
    • The creation of coherent and robust Safety Arguments
  • International Standards including - MIL-STD-882
  • Experience of:
  • Analytical and/or diagnostic techniques
  • Relevant Legislation, Regulation and Standards
  • MOD UK Def Stan 00-55
  • Requirement management
