My client provides a variety of electronic products for military applications including naval sonar, airborne sonar, torpedo defence systems, combat management systems, gun fire control systems, electro-optic systems, cameras, data distribution systems and weapon interfacing electronics. In addition my client has moved into a Prime Contract Management role providing whole platform solutions.
The Electronics & Electrical Function provides the specific electronic and electrical engineering expertise and capability the business needs win and deliver its projects successfully.
The Electronics & Electrical Function consists of around 25 engineers of varying skills and experience levels, who work with other Engineering and business functions to deliver a range of projects, and support an array of products.
The Purpose of the Role:
The Electrical & Electronics Function within the business is responsible for managing and developing the engineering resources within the Function (~25 people) with support from team leads on each sites to ensure that the business has the adequate skills, processes and appropriate headcount allocation to deliver its strategic objectives. The Functional Lead will report into the Head of Engineering Function.
In addition to Functional management, the Functional Lead will work on projects taking on key project roles to deliver design and delivery activities. These project tasks could range from the design for new products through to providing customer support to trials, trial data analysis and identifying solutions to component obsolescence and production issues of existing designs (see project roles below).
Line management of engineers within the Electrical /Electronics Function, and allocation of engineers to projects.
Liaising with Engineering Managers, Capability Managers and other stakeholders to provide Functional engineering support.
Managing a functional group, its resources (forward load, resource conflict resolution…), knowledge, skills, processes, procedures and tools to align with the current and future business needs.
Developing the Functional group by promoting and applying best practice and engineering excellence.
Interfacing with other engineering Functions (such as systems, software and mechanical) to ensure efficient and coherent working practices.
Travel to other sites to support day-to-day Functional activities.
Providing Functional representation at internal and external design reviews.
Identifying and helping manage risk within the Function, and as applied to projects.
Develop and mature the Electrical Engineering processes and tool to improve efficiency
Provision of practical engineering support to other activities and team members, where time and priorities permit.
An Electrical & Electronic Functional Lead may also undertake project roles as required: Principal Electronic Design Engineer, Work Package Manager (WPM), Sub-System Design Authority (SSDA) and Project Engineering Lead (PEL).
Conducting the tasks as define in the responsibilities above
As a senior member of the Engineering Function team, escalating and reporting resourcing issues and developments on a weekly basis
Conducting wider engineering leadership tasks assigned by the Head of Engineering Function
Attending Resource Conflict and Forward Load meetings on a regular basis to assure best allocation of key resources to tasks.
Regular leasing with Engineering Managers and providing them the support required
Mentoring and coaching more junior members of the team
Support continuous improvement initiatives
Identify training needs for staff
Introduce and maintain tools to facilitate efficient working from Functional resources.
A Functional Lead has line management responsibility for all engineers within their Function.
Typically, a structure of Functional Team Leads is in place to create a hierarchy, and to provide local line management representation across the three business sites.
Tools, S/W Packages and Equipment Used:
ECAD tools (a number are used within the biasness, such as Altium, Cadence and PSpice) Business IT systems, use of company products and customer furnished equipment, with occasional use of laboratory equipment, integration facilities and trials facilities. Specialist tools expected to incudes IBM DOORs, Matlab and Configuration Management tools.
