Role Description Reporting to the Director Advanced Manufacturing and Head of Technical Services, the Responsible Level 3 Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Engineer shall act as the company's Subject Matter Expert (SME) in all NDT matters regarding procedures, standards, specifications, NDT results, personnel training, examination, certification and supervision, in the various NDT and materials evaluation methods in which the post holder is qualified. This includes, as a minimum: Visual (VT), Penetrant (PT), Magnetic (MT), Ultrasonic (UT) and Radiographic (RT) inspection techniques in strict accordance with project specifications and client best practice bulletins.
Responsibilities Lead on health, safety, security, environment and quality for all NDT operations undertaken by staff and sub-contractors. Responsible for the NDT operations for which qualified and assigned, and capable of interpreting and evaluating results in terms of existing codes, standards, and specifications. Obtain, where applicable, and maintain ASNT Level 3 qualifications and certifications, by ASNT examination, as required by the company to allow continuity of Level 3 duties for specific projects. Ensure adequate self-development and training/cross training is undertaken to fulfil the role and responsibilities, share knowledge with team members and contribute to team development. Develop, qualify, and approve procedures, establish and approve techniques, interpret codes, standards, specifications, and procedures, and designate the particular NDT methods, techniques, and procedures to be used within the scope and limitations of any certification held. Able to carry out all tasks at all levels, and provide guidance for NDT personnel at all levels. Review and update the Company Written Practice to cover all project NDT operations. Resolve Key NDT issues in order that respective project target dates are met. Engage with the client's technical authority to resolve conflict and interpretation of requirement disputes. Authorised and responsible for the training, examination, certification and ongoing oversight of NDT personnel to ensure they are competent and qualified to perform the applicable tests in conformance with contractual requirements, i.e. conforming to SNT-TC-1A with NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, as required. Develop and maintain company based examination papers and invigilate and mark examinations ensuring central awarding body standards are met and maintained. Ensure final acceptance of NDT inspection activities is in accordance with the contract specified requirements. Develop and maintain audit schedules and records, training schedules and records for company based NDT operations, including the workmanship requirements of NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, NAVSEA T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688 & EB4186E. Develop schedules and manage the process of auditing of sub-contractors performing NDT operations.
Extensive knowledge of own subject area with extensive industrial NDT experience holding multiple NDT method Level 3 certification, by examination, to ASNT in the following techniques: Visual (VT), Penetrant (PT), Magnetic (MT), Ultrasonic (UT) and Radiographic (RT). Ability to assume full responsibility for the site's test facility, examination centre and staff. Willingness to be flexible and multi-task as part of a team, and contribute to company objectives. Strongly motivated to achieve results, with a high degree of professionalism, honesty and integrity. Excellent organisational and time management skills, able to prioritise workloads with competing deadlines. Creative skills to plan and deliver training in a professional, positive and engaging manner. E-literate and competent in developing, administering and using PC and associated networks and systems (e.g. Microsoft Office) to acquire, manipulate and disseminate information.
Qualifications/Experience Qualified and certified (by examination within the preceding 5 years) to ASNT Level 3 for: Visual (VT), Penetrant (PT), Magnetic (MT), Ultrasonic (UT) and Radiographic (RT). Chartered Engineer. A minimum of 5 years recent and relevant experience in a similar environment.
