Introduction

A vacancy has arisen for a professional Mechanical Design Engineer to work within the weapons design team on projects from design and development stage through to the final manufacture and implementation.

Typically duties and tasks:

* Populate Design development documentation by working with the Integrated Project Teams (IPT) using a Formal Design Review process (FDR) through the stages of:
o Requirements & Root Cause Analysis
o Developing Candidate Solutions
o Candidate down selection and risk reduction
o Development for manufacture
o Qualification
* Derive functional system requirements from customer needs.
* Concept generation and development of weapons sub systems including:
o Structures
o Ammunition feed systems
o Elevation / traverse systems
o Man Machine Interfaces
* Weight optimization of systems / structures via re-design and / or use of advanced materials.
* Develop designs in line with requirements and all quality and technical standards.
* Perform technical investigations, including evaluation of technical options, supporting calculations and preparation of reports with recommendations.
* Integration of sub-systems into an evolving product design, including laboratory tests, shop-floor development testing and off site trials.
* Participate in bid preparation to facilitate the development of successful bids.
* Participate in internal and external meetings or design reviews
* Definition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes.
* Ensuring that the product will operate safely and reliably in the military operating environment, and can be manufactured cost effectively.
* Preparing drawings, and other technical outputs, consistent with the contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget demands.
* Support Quality department with ongoing NCR (non-conformance report) work.


Educational Background:

The candidate will have ideally been educated to degree level or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment, or to HNC level with 5 years relevant experience.
The candidate should meet the requirements for registration as incorporated or chartered engineer and preferably be a member of a relevant professional body.

* Engineering background in a weapons system or design for military use.
* Structural / Stress analysis (MS Excel, Mathcad, FEA {PTC Simulate / Ansys})
* System control (Matlab /Simulink)
* Hydraulic system design
* Pneumatic system design
