Job Summary

A vacancy for a Laboratory Technician has arisen to work on space flight hardware including the ExoMars Rover project. This role reports to the Materials Laboratory Manager.

  • To join the cleanliness and contamination team within the Materials Laboratory.
  • Support will also be required for other Materials Laboratory tasks - mainly chemical analysis.

Job Profile

Main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Hands-on testing of materials used in the manufacture of space products
  • Collecting and analysing cleanliness and contamination samples
  • Working in a cleanliness controlled environment
  • Using and maintaining a wide range of test equipment
  • Support the continuous maintenance and review of Material Laboratory Procedures (MLPs) and laboratory working processes
  • Maintain and improve internal databases and operating procedures
  • Participate in Material Laboratory Audits, Safety Reviews and daily team meetings

Skills/Experience Required

Essential

  • Experience working within a commercial / Industrial laboratory environment
  • Practical experience of chemical testing, with a particular emphasis on industrial chemistry
  • Flexible and proactive approach to work and is prepared to work at other client sites and at customer and supplier locations as directed

Desirable

  • Experience of working in cleanroom or cleanliness controlled environment
  • Demonstrable team working skills, communication and presentation capability
  • Experience using an FTIR
  • Experience of fibre volume testing, ICP, Thermal analysis (DSC & DMA) Titrations
  • PC literate, report and specification writing, database maintenance and spreadsheets
  • Fluent in written and spoken communication

Education & Training

  • Degree in a Chemistry, Materials Science or similar

Other

  • Clean room working is a daily part of the role
  • Occasional ad hoc shifts will be worked
  • There will be occasional travel to other sites in the UK and overseas
