Role: HVAC Engineer / HVAC Systems Engineer - UK Nuclear New Build

Location: Bristol - 2 minutes drive off of M4/M5 junction

Salary: £30000 - £48000/year

Start: July 2018 onwards (long notice period will be accepted for the right candidate)

An exciting opportunity exists for experienced and ambitious Process / Mechancial Engineers with knowledge/experience of HVAC / ventilation / building services systems (ideally in the nucelar industry) to work as an HVAC Systems Engineer for our prestigious client, one of the world's largest engineering companies, in helping to design the next fleet of nuclear power stations in the UK.

The HVAC System Engineer is responsible for the system documents containing information on the design and the operation of the ventilation systems in the Balance of Nuclear Island (BNI) for the Hinkley Point C project. The HVAC System Engineer is responsible for writing and updating the system design manuals (description, sizing, P&ID and I&C) and other related documentation.

The system engineer may be responsible for the production of one or more SDM, depending on the complexity of the systems.


Based on the specification transmitted to our client for the system, the Preliminary Safety Report and Engineering Guidelines, the HVAC System Engineer:

1. Writes the System Design Manual for the system(s) under their responsibility including:

  • Describing the system, its role and missions (including safety missions),
  • Performing aeraulic and thermal design calculations for the system and its components, including use of the ThBat tool for thermal modelling,
  • Specifying the functional requirement for instrumentation and control, and preparing DFD diagrams
  • Liaising with the teams in the Paris offices responsible for the HVAC contract to ensure the HVAC contract meets the requirements of the systems under our client's responsibility

2. Manages modifications related to the system:

  • Managing modification requests from the various engineering teams within the client and the wider the HPC project
  • Checks the suitability for incorporation into the system design, challenges the necessity and implements them into the system design in accordance with client procedures

3. Uses knowledge and skills by:

  • Working collaboratively with counterparts in Paris
  • Supporting other HVAC engineers within the team by sharing knowledge and experience to find solutions to technical problems
  • Constructively challenging the HVAC design
  • Applying UK specific legislation and best practice in the field of Nuclear HVAC
  • Proactively seeking feedback from others within the HPC project on HVAC design for HPC and incorporates this into the work performed in Bristol
  • Maintaining a good working knowledge of all HVAC systems which fall under Bristol's scope
  • Driving continuous improvement within the HVAC work by:
  • Constantly looking for ways to improve quality of design
  • Supporting the embedment of Nuclear Professionalism and Error Reduction Tools within the work performed by the HVAC team

4. Utilising learning reports, lessons learned processes


  • A Mechanical, Process, Energy or Thermodynamics Degree, ideally with a HVAC bias
  • Experience in HVAC in a Nuclear context (Mechanical / Process / I&C)
  • Thorough working knowledge of HVAC design (including design principles, industry standards, thermal calculations and modelling )
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and control application in HVAC design
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety principles relating to design and operation
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and operation of Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs) would be useful but in not essential
