Head of Project Management required to operate across the Country Business Unit (CBU) covering Cheadle and Templecombe. This role will be a key part of the Bids & Project Management Office within the CBU. This role provides Project Management oversight to ensure the successful delivery of projects and programmes through the application of 'Best Practice'. Candidates will come from an aerospace/defence or possibly nuclear engineering background rather than construction/IT.

The post holder will provide authoritative guidance to the Project Management community within [CBU] and will be the lead Process Correspondent for 'Manage Project'.

The role involves but is not limited to the following:

  • Lead the optimisation of Project Management capability across [CBU].
  • Oversee the implementation and delivery of all [CBU] related project / programmes.
  • Tailor and drive continuous improvement of local processes in line with Group policies and 'Best Practice'.
  • Participate in the UK PROJCOM.
  • Co-ordinate with the Senior Project Managers within each of the geographical perimeter B & PMOs.
  • Manage the Project Manager network to support knowledge share and best practice.
  • Provide expert support to projects during planning, execution and closure.
  • Provide support in process implementation.
  • Support Process Gap Analysis and Change Impact Analysis for the local business.
  • Support Root Cause Analysis investigations specifically those associated with CNQ and audit non-conformances associated with Manage Project.
  • Chair the [CBU] CCB's for Process 5.2.
  • Evaluate project delivery strategies, including those required for maximising opportunities, and to mitigate and minimise risks.
  • Providing robust leadership to build team confidence, competence and talent across the project management community.
  • Coach and Mentor project managers within [CBU].
  • Participate in the identification of training needs and the provision of training within the business.
  • Ensure that project plans and estimates for bids are appropriately developed and reviewed.
  • Propose improvements for operational activities, business tools and processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through collaborative work in Project teams, capitalisation of data, involvement of transverse functions and co-operation between perimeters and other CBUs
  • Support CBU reporting requirements of project information.
  • The role will also involve occasional ad-hoc duties that are not listed above but are necessary to respond to the needs of the business. These ad-hoc duties will be consistent with the nature of a Project Management Office Manager position within the business.

  • Experience in governance & deployment of project control systems


  • Experience of working across boundaries, including knowledge of commercial management, best practice supply chain and finance functions.
  • Full business lifecycle management, including capture, qualification and developing capture plans and winning strategies
  • IPMA / Prince / APM qualified
  • Experience of working across geographical boundaries in a virtual organisation.



  • Second degree or business qualification at diploma Masters Level.
  • Engineering or Business Degree/diploma
  • Knowledge of national and international standards for project management.
  • APM / IPMA qualified
  • Membership of a project management professional body

Recognising the RESTRICTED nature of the work, suitable candidates will be SC cleared or eligible for this level of clearance.
