Purpose of role:

Provide engineering and management expertise for the delivery of power generation systems into the programme. Manage the Electrical Systems engineering resource including the delivery of engineering work and services with multiple interfaces with customers and suppliers.

To be responsible for the development of stage 1 Electrical System engineering design within cost, schedule and quality targets.


The role will lead all Power Generation Systems work for the programme.

This role will be required to lead the design of:-

  • Whole Ship Requirements Power & Propulsion
  • Diesel Generators Configuration and Power requirements

The role is required to be skilled in the design of Electrical systems, and experienced in delivering solutions that meet a demanding customer requirement in all phases of a shipbuilding lifecycle from requirement to acceptance.

You will identify, select and assess suitable standards and design rules for adoption in the variant designs. He/she will also be aware of and work within the national and international legal and regulatory constraints including future developments intended to be enshrined in law.

You will be able to perform robust and methodical analysis of engineering issues and possess the judgement to recommend preferred solutions.

You will prepare and agree suitable margins to be adopted in the variant designs and will prepare and manage customer load charts for systems.

The role will seek to introduce new technologies that are intended to meet and exceed customer expectations of quality and affordability.

The role will be required to lead the integration of the transversal factors influencing warship system design including potentially underwater radiated noise, shock, survivability, operability, reliability, availability, human factors, design for support, design for manufacture, design for commissioning etc.

The role shall have sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design to make sound and justifiable design trade-off decisions.

The role shall be able to present satisfactory designs that satisfy regular and routine Life Cycle Management Design Reviews that meet the corporate standard.


The role holder will lead solution appraisals together with technical assessments of supplier proposals as part of the development of design solutions. There is a particular focus on delivering solutions that minimise warship through life costs (TLC) whilst at the same time remaining within whole ship target unit purchase costs (UPC). The intent, where possible, is to adopt cutting edge, cost effective technologies that drive down costs.

The role holder will lead the management of technical risk of marine and Electrical systems and will be experienced in the identification, assessment, categorisation and mitigation of risk.


This role will lead Electrical system design teams to create designs that are fit for purpose and safe to use. The role holder will be well versed in the methodical identification, categorisation and mitigation of hazards to personnel and to the environment.

The role holder will also be accountable for ensuring that Product Safety is applied effectively to Electrical system design in accordance with the company Product Safety Policy and Product Safety Management Framework.

The role holder, in the capacity of delegated Design Authority, will be empowered to sign off ALARP statements for Electrical systems within their charge.


This role will lead a team of engineers employing the following company computer aided design tools:-

  • WINDCHILL - Engineering Data Management;
  • AUTOCAD - 2 dimensional sketches;
  • FORAN - for reviewing the 3 D model;
  • VIRTALIS visualisation technology
  • IHS Database for regulations and standards;

This role will lead the contribution to an integrated Bill of Materials (iBOM) for Electrical systems specifying parts, part attributes and part occurrences.


The role will be responsible for ensuring that physical integration of Electrical systems within the scope of the role is completed satisfactorily and without compromise to the design intent.

The role holder will manage the compartment ownership of Inside and Outside Machinery Spaces and other ancillary spaces.


The role will lead technical support to supply chain and those charged with sub contract management. The role will liaise with the supplier technical authorities and oversee review of hard and soft supplier deliverables to ensure compliance with the specification, employing Company Quality teams as required. The role will authorise release of subcontractor deliverables for use by the rest of the project.


The role will be expected to lead the design of systems that satisfy the selected Classification Society notations. The role will be very familiar with Ship Classification Society Rules and liaising directly with surveyors. The role will also specify, assess, select and work with suppliers to employ equipment approved by the Classification Societies. The role will be required to be vigilant when examining supplier claims for classification society approval and should verify them where possible.

The role holder will possess the drive, determination and tenacity to obtain Classification Society approval of Electrical systems


The role will be required to create and foster an open and professional relationship with customer representatives, leading discussions on behalf of the company for marine systems matters. The role holder will possess a clear customer focus and will be expected to respond quickly and willingly to customer requests and queries.


The role holder will lead the Electrical Systems Design Team to deliver:-

  • Design descriptions/Justifications;
  • Equipment specifications;
  • Ship Specifications
  • Technical tender assessments;
  • System schematics;
  • Desktop design reviews
  • Design guidance and design rules for detail design;
  • Technical risk identification & mitigations;
  • PowerPoint Presentations for Marketing Purposes
  • Functional And Physical Design Maturity Reports
  • Progress reporting;
  • Draft budgets and programme schedules.MAINTENANCE OF DESIGN INTENT

  • The role will lead activities dedicated to ensuring the maintenance of design intent, particularly when design work has contracted out or Stage 2 design support has been requested.
