Purpose of role:

Undertake a broad range of electrically based commissioning activities, ensuring successful delivery to agreed performance targets.

Key Technical Skills:

Experience in technical leadership of commissioning/engineering activities or experience in shipbuilding and platform equipment integration

Forward thinking to plan a variety of tasks

Technical authority in a broad range of commissioning activities.

Able to assess the Health and Safety implications of the commissioning activities

Industry Knowledge:

The engineer should have a strong engineering background and be familiar with the requirements for commissioning systems and associated interfaces. This could be gained through service at sea in a military or commercial application with relevant MCA class approved watch keeping and engineering certification or experience in shipbuilding and integration of platform equipment


HNC/HND qualified meeting the requirements for IEng of a relevant professional and/or 5 years' experience of shipbuilding

Tasks and Activities:

Plan, control and deliver commissioning activities, and make an input as required to cross-functional delivery of systems, ensuring requirements are delivered to plan/budget.

Carry out investigations into operational problems or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a team.

Participate fully in developing, maintaining and modifying commissioning processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.

Make commissioning decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.

Key Accountabilities:

Evaluate technical issues in order to develop proposals for investigations and/or solutions, including process improvements.

Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of commissioning capability.

Act as the main point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve relatively complex problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.

Technical responsibility and ownership of platform systems delivering fully STW and trialled systems.

Provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.

Represent Trials and Commissioning on technical matters (including meetings and correspondence)


Conduct pre-commissioning and setting to work and commissioning of systems and associated interfaces

Present systems for acceptance to both client and relevant approval authorities

Integrate and work with Engineering Sub-contractors on site and provide oversight of sub-contractor tasks

Adhere to H&SE

Support HATs and SATs

Witness FATs

Write Test Forms

Implement best practice

Promote Improvement
