Job Role:

To become a key part of a team with a proven track record for delivering DSP firmware for a wide range of defence and commercial related products, developing bespoke hardware solutions for customers or standard reusable solutions for product lines and variants thereof.

Projects involve using the latest industry class development tools for FPGA and SoC hardware technologies. Work is carried out to a structured hardware design process, but within an Agile Scrum delivery team.

Principal Relationships:

The primary focus of role will be the project or product line team, with day to day line management conducted through either the Hardware Team Leads or the System Engineering managers within the Project team:

Key Tasks:

  • Decomposition and interpretation of system requirements & algorithms
  • Design and develop DSP firmware using Hardware Description Languages or High Level Synthesis Languages
  • Simulation and analysis
  • Verify firmware using Hardware Description languages or Hardware Verification Languages
  • Integration of firmware on the target hardware
  • Test, measurement, debug and verification (digital)
  • Design Assurance (Complex Electronics)
  • Technical assistance to production

Skills:

Essential:

  • Expert skills in the hardware development language (VHDL)
  • Implementation of complex designs with a focus on Digital Signal Processing using FPGA devices
  • Sound Knowledge of DSP techniques such as Up/Down Conversion, Filter Design, FFT etc
  • Simulation of designs
  • Implementation of algorithms designed in High Level tools such as Matlab/Simulink
  • Knowledge of the analogue RF processing techniques
  • An excellent understanding of the fundamentals of High speed digital design
  • A working knowledge of Signal Integrity Analysis
  • A working knowledge of Microprocessors, programmable devices, DSP, FPGA, memory
  • Knowledge of PCB design constraints
  • CAD tools: Matlab/Simulink, Mentor Graphics, ModelSim for Verification, Xilinx Vivado / ISE
  • Experience of Agile Scrum and its use in FPGA developments

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of FPGA architectures
  • Knowledge of Xilinx Zynq 7000 and Ultrascale +
  • Knowledge of Verification Methodology: UVM
  • Knowledge of Matlab/Simulink for design and verification of DSP concepts
  • Knowledge of scripting languages: TCL, PERL, Python
  • Team leadership / Work package management
  • Design for manufacture / test / support
  • Appreciation of the fundamentals of analogue, RF, electro-mechanical and mechanical engineering

Experience Required:

Essential:

  • A proven & demonstrable record of Digital Hardware and / or Firmware design activities with relevance to the role
  • Working in and or / leading small development teams
  • Knowledge of the relevant markets: defence, security and aerospace

Desirable:

  • Product development experience for commercial markets

Qualifications Required:

Essential:

A relevant degree or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline (Electronic Engineering, Electrical and Electronic, or Communications), supported by 10+ years of relevant experience.

Desirable:

  • IET Chartered
  • A Masters or equivalent in relevant specialisation
