Purpose of role:

To conduct a rolling audit of the FORAN model of the ship to identify areas of over engineering with a view to reducing weight

Technical Skills:

Possesses in-depth knowledge of all aspects within his/her discipline.

Able to perform robust analysis using recognised draughting and analytical tools and to make sound judgements based on experience.

Has sufficient breadth of knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able make correct trade-off decisions

Industry Knowledge:

Minimum 5 Years' experience in engineering or a defence or related industry

Qualifications:

Typically HNC/HND qualified, likely to be in a technology, engineering or science related discipline

Meet the requirements for registration As Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council and preferably be a member of a relevant Professional Body

Tasks and Activities:

Review FORAN model and identify areas of potential over engineering

For areas identified engage with appropriate stakeholders to confirm or otherwise the potential for weight reduction

Support affected engineers/detail designers by suggesting alternative arrangements.

Support affected engineers/detail designers in raising required Change Requests, if required, to realise opportunity.

Outputs/Deliverables:

Monthly presentations on areas identified

CAD Models delievering design intent of alternative solutions.

Tracking of weight savings being identified

Functional Skills:

Appreciates and can articulate the value of the engineering lifecycle and the relationship to the Lifecycle Management Process. Appreciates that there are technical reviews to ensure product viability.

Appreciates and can articulate the need to ensure that products are acceptably safe and that product and system safety assessments form part of the design process.

Has had some exposure to regulatory and statutory requirements of the product and understands potential liabilities.

Has an appreciation of the requirement that the environmental impact of our activities is sustainable in the long term.

Appreciates the need for a supportability engineering process to sustain the long term viability of the business. Understands that supportability goes beyond basic design, maintenance and operability requirements.
