Purpose of Role:

Hardware Engineering capability is applied to the development and support of physical equipment required for a Combat Systems product portfolio. Equipment is primarily designed using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components and packaged for the naval environment.

Hardware Engineers provide expertise to:

Support systems engineers and System Design Authorities (SDAs) with the physical aspects of system design

Derive product requirements (electrical, electronic and mechanical)

Generate concepts for candidate solutions

Assess feasibility of solutions

Generate detailed designs for chosen solutions to meet all functional, operational and transverse requirements in accordance with processes including reviews of obsolescence management, problem reporting and change management

Design for X:

- Design for safety

- Design for reliability

- Design for EMC

- Design for test

- Design for maintenance

Generate procurement specifications for, and technically manage the third-party supply of assemblies and sub-systems

Devise test requirements and undertake design proving and support qualification testing

Assemble, integrate, and test system hardware

Generate technical construction files, in line with governance rules, to support design certification

Provide installation guidance

Support on-site installation and commissioning (including support to trails)

Tasks and Activities:

Applies basic engineering principles and knowledge to perform conventional, less complex tasks

Uses readily available reference material to provide straightforward solutions to problems

Initially closely supervised, but able to work increasingly independently with experience

Able to work in teams with primary contact being with other team members and team leader and able to support own peers where experience and knowledge permit

Increasingly develop contacts within wider organisation. Contacts with other organisations and outside customer developed with progression.


Minimum 2.2 Honours Degree (or equivalent experience)

Typically first appointment post Graduate Development Programme; ex Engineering Higher Apprenticeship programme; or direct entry experienced hire

Understands hardware engineering approaches, processes and procedures

Designs and develops solutions to common or well-articulated Engineering situations

Experience in development of equipment using COTS hardware to practitioner level

Experience of engineering lifecycle phases

Experience of the following (not all will be to practitioner level):

requirements derivation and analysis; design partitioning;

detailed equipment design; working with sub-contractors and suppliers; procurement activities; assembly integration and test;

support to qualification testing; support to trials

Engineering support post- delivery
