Business Architect

Location: Broad Oak, Hampshire

Duration: Initially until 28th February 2019

Rate: £70 - £83 per hour LTD


Our client is seeking a Business Architect to work within the maritime business area to:

  • Define the Maritime Business Architecture and delivers the Business Capability Model
  • Co-ordinate tasks to assist major programmes in Business Development, Strategy, Transformation and Engineering to define the company-wide capabilities & processes
  • Work within the Enterprise Architecture team to align the business to the architecture, define the priorities for different business streams. Cognisant of the overall business strategy and solutions and defines business requirements that are solution and technology agnostic

Core Duties

  • Own and manage all aspects of the Maritime Services as-is and to-be Business Architecture
  • Lead a community of practice of people from across Maritime Services to define the business architecture by working with senior members of the Strategy, FMSP and EBS teams
  • Lead an IS&S team that defines the information architecture and populates the Enterprise Architecture repository
  • Detail the business architecture by creating analysis and models that can be re-used across the whole of Maritime Services business by:
    • Interpreting and decomposing the future state vision and business strategy into a Business Capability Model
    • Assessing the gaps and overlaps between the Business Capability Model and the high level processes in the Maritime Services BMS and MOD CSM strategy and outputs
  • Use the analysis/model to inform and assist the Strategy, FMSP and EBS teams and to help set transformation and development priorities
  • Influence and manage different stakeholders groups across Maritime Services that are undertaking local business architecture tasks and identify synergies and contributions to the business architecture
  • Ensure that the Business Architecture and Business Capability Model are documented in accordance with the Enterprise Architecture method and approach
  • Ensure that relevant strategies, policies, standards and practices are applied correctly
  • Work with the Enterprise Architect to define and document the methods for updating the business architecture that fit with the wider organisation
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the definition of business processes and business strategy
  • Work with the Maritime Services Business Development teams to influence the customer business architecture
  • Work with the IS&S Customer Solutions Manager to ensure that bids from other business streams are aligned to the business architecture
  • Asses the overlaps and gaps in the as-is and to-be business architectures
  • Works to ensure the business architecture is used to define the priorities and scope of the application architecture
  • Work with colleagues across the Maritime Sector to advise them on the Maritime Services Business Architecture

Proven Ability / Key Skills

  • University degree educated
  • Extensive Business analysis, Systems Engineering or business architecture proven ability
  • Significant stakeholder management proven ability
  • A good knowledge of the Maritime sector
  • A good knowledge of business modelling techniques such as value stream analysis, scenario modelling, capability modelling and process modelling
  • A working knowledge of TOGAF, MODAF or other frameworks for developing architectures in a System of Systems approach
  • A thorough understanding of architecture principles, presentation and communication skills
  • The ability to set and uphold technical standards
  • Ability to influence and manage other key stakeholders and senior business leaders not within direct line of management
  • Ability to manage and lead a team
  • Ability to coach or mentor junior staff in business architecture skills and stakeholder management
  • A good understanding of Project Management Processes and Practices
  • Ability to set stretch and realistic targets
  • Ability to shape positive relationships with key stakeholders to ensure that requirements are met with practical solutions (both Team and Customers)
  • Carry out clear communication to all levels of the business if required
