Signature Project

Theme park | MotionGate | Dubai

It is one of the Middle East’s major tourist attractions.

This project is interesting because unusual buildings are having to be constructed, for example traditional Chinese roofs are having to be made out of concrete for the kung foo panda section of the theme park. They also had to build a lake for a ride that would have to hold 30 million litres of water, which they found “demanding”; for this they had to use shotcrete and waterproof concrete.

Building during a Dubai summer has its drawbacks for productivity. Due to the soaring temperatures it is prohibited to work after 12.30pm and even the ice chilled concrete has to be poured during the night shift to avoid it setting too fast. Sandstorms are also common and restrict external works. This year, the holy month of Ramadan commenced in June, which also reduced the working hours, with operatives fasting throughout the day.

Due to the success of the park, we were asked to build two previously unplanned attractions for the Lionsgate IP holder, themed around the Hunger Games movie franchise. These buildings are due to be completed by February 2017. Ultimately, thanks to the hard work and flexible approach of the teams on both construction packages, everything is on schedule for the grand opening – and by all accounts Motiongate will be something special.
