Construction on the long-talked-about high-speed train between Las Vegas and Southern California could start as soon as 2020 if bonds are approved by February.
The new route will allow passengers to travel around 185 miles (297 kilometres) between Las Vegas and Victorville, California, in about 90 minutes.
Virgin Trains USA executive Tina Quigley has said that construction on the long-talked-about high-speed train between Las Vegas and Southern California could start as soon as 2020 if bonds are approved by February.
The new route will allow passengers to travel around 185 miles (297 kilometres) between Las Vegas and Victorville, California, in about 90 minutes. Victorville is 85 miles (137 kilometres) northeast of Los Angeles.
It is expected that work will begin first in California, where state lawmakers recently approved a $3.25 billion bond request. Virgin is now waiting for approval in Nevada for $950 million in bonds.Tina said:
“They’ll probably start in about five different areas when construction starts, those five areas will probably be in California.”
“It wouldn’t be until early-to-mid 2021 that the Vegas station and the work in Vegas would start.”
Virgin Trains USA was previously known as Brightline. It already operates a high-speed train through densely populated areas between Miami and West Palm Beach, Florida.
Construction is expected to take three years and cost $4.8 billion
