"A Key Element of Our Strategy Is Diversification" | MAG-O's Kelly Singleton Talks Agile Working

Interview

We recently spoke to Kelly Singleton, director of HR at MAG-O, about how agile working has improved productivity and retention. In the second part of our interview, we talked about ED&I and how flexible working and diversification into other markets has been aided by a flexible approach.

What's the expectation from above for further innovation?

It's always challenging and they set us challenging targets and I think that's right and I think that's why we're continually knocking it out of the park. In the core MAG strategy for the next five years, one of the key elements is diversification and international growth into new markets. That's our deliverable and that's what sits in our division. So if we go to them with small acquisitions, for example, or organic growth by insourcing activity, they assess our business case and then release the funding. It's fantastic, and who knows where it'll end really as we now move more into this B2B market.

So that innovation that's led to a diversification of services - what's it been like in terms of diversity within the team? ED&I is a huge topic now, so how has flexible working helped improve that?

There's no one type of candidate really, but you're going out there with an attractive proposition and people see if it works for them. We have this whole process where they come in and meet the whole team. It's a full 360 degree assessment by soft gentle and informal discussions and walking around our home, looking at how we work and what we work on. You get lots of time to assess whether that candidate is right for us and whether we're right for them. You're looking for a match really. Equally, what we've found is that the diversity is steadily increasing. Initially, it was the same old, same old! It was at that time where we had no brand really, no mark in the digital space. We were just going for the best we could hire really. So diversity, although we wanted it, couldn't really come into it as much. Now, as we've developed and grown, we're in all sorts of forums - like Women in Tech, going into junior tech events as well and getting out and about into the network as much as possible. We've naturally seen our diversity increase as a result of that.
