The WannaCry Attack: Prevention Is Better Than A Cure

As the story of another cyber attack continues to dominate the media, director of Morson Cyber Security Andy Mayo talks about what happened, and why our managed service solution could have stopped it in its tracks.

On Friday 12 May, the news broke of a massive cyber attack on multiple companies across 150 countries, including the UK’s National Health Service.

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts user’s data to the point where they cannot unlock it without the hacker’s decryption. It then demands payment in exchange for access to the data being restored, hence the name.

This particular strain of ransomware, known as WannaCry or WanaCrypt0r 2.0, exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was actually patched in March 2017. It was the computers that hadn’t installed the update that were successfully breached, and it explains how it has managed to be quite as widespread across the globe as it has been. The origin is, as of 15 May, unclear.

It seems to be every week we are hearing about yet another breach. The scales might vary but every time the damages are substantial and the routes that hackers use can be frustratingly simple and entirely preventable with the right software. There are a lot of companies out there offering remedies to WannaCry, but surely, as with viruses both real and cyber, good prevention is better than having to look for a cure?

Morson Cyber Security has formed a strategic partnership with Assuria, a cyber security company that supplies military-grade cyber defence software to global blue-chip enterprises across a variety of industries including government and defence. This forms part of a managed service provision which includes technology like intrusion detection, insider threat, behavioural monitoring, change monitoring and asset management to name just some of the offering of the full suite. Our managed solution could have prevented an attack like this in the first place and stopped it in its tracks before any damage could be done.

What we have at Morson Cyber Security in partnership with Assuria is a truly world class cyber defence managed solution. None of the systems that were breached throughout the world were protected by the Assuria software. It’s trusted by governments and the military, and while we should not diminish the substantial impact this attack has had on the NHS and other institutions across the world, a cyber attack on a military or defence establishment could have far, far more damaging consequences.

More attacks like this are coming, that’s a fact. Why not trust the experts and get a managed solution trusted by those who can’t afford to fail?
